Memeo or Macrium

Hi all, I have been looking at Macrium as a possible Back up app, but after buying a Seagate FreeAgent Go Flex external hard drive, I see that there is an offer to get Memeo back up free or paid from within the Seagate software. I checked out the Memeo site and kind of like what I see. But as I am not a techie, I thought I had better check with you guys before I make a decision. Can you tell me if Memeo is good for full back ups as there are a few options as well? I see that they back up on the fly as you go. Is that preferable to scheduled back ups? I don't intend this to be a which one is better thread, just wondering if Memeo is simple to use and as Seagate recommends it, is it a good bet. I have a new computer, so I started using Windows back up to get me going. I suspect some other choices might be better, but it works. Thanks in advance.

Never heard of Memeo, but here (at my place) we're big fans of Macrium.

What on earth is Memeo. I thought I had tried about every imaging product on the planet, but Memeo is new to me. If you like it, try it. But I would use a known product for backup. Memeo is a lot like Seagate Replica which comes with the Seagate GoFlex Desk External Drives.

I have tried the Replica software, and it works just fine... so the Memeo, if similar, should also do fine (it is probably the same thing..... just branded differently... but I will degress.....)

But.... don't depend on it totally. Do Image Backups too, using Macrium, and have 2 different backups to depend on.... can't be tooooooooooo careful with your data!

Thanks to all for the responses. I think I'll go with Macrium. Since a lot of folks here use it, I will be able to ask questions if I need help. There is already enough tutorials about Macrium.

Horrible Seagate Goflex_Home Network Drive. My experience with this 1TB network drive is about the worst in 25 years of assembling my own PCs.

I bought the drive as a solution to back up three PCs on a home wireless network. The one drive would always be available for back up.

The drive is bundled with Memeo back up software which needs to be installed on each PC with password required to access, even if there is only one user. The software is designed to do real time back ups to a location on the drive, updating the backup as changes occur. Disasters of course occur if you change the backup and not the original.

The program worked on one PC, the one connected by ethernet to the router. It did not work on the other two wireless connections. Contacting Memeo, as Seagate required. was useless. I had to tell someone named Jason three times to read my question. He kept answering questions I was not asking. Finally he sent back a solution completely incomprehensible.

My objective is to always have a recent image of my each harddrive backed up. I tried Windows 7 backup routine and discovered that Windows 7 Home Premium will not see networked drives. Apparently Win 7 Professional and ultimate will.

I had experience with Easus backup but needed the pay version to see a networked drive. OK I paid $39.00. But that wouldn't work either. Easeus support couldn't solve that, saying its a network or drive issue.

Finally I contacted Seagate support. Their answer was they don't support third party software. Truly the last time they will see any of my $.

One other interesting point. the drive is supposedly designed to stop spinning when there is no activity. This drive is ALWAYS spinning.

I would really like to get this all to work. Any ideas? Thanks.

The two programs are not the same. Memo (which I will not use) will copy files and folders but not OS files. You have little to no options to what it will backup. Macrium on the other hand will image a whole partition, several partitions or a whole disk. With it you can restore your entire system, programs and emails as well as user files. It is quite user friendly and fast. Memo will not do that.

Update: Thanks to all here I installed Macrium Free and have done my first image. Really nice.

I would just stick with those which have built a good reputation.


Macrium if you want a Free solution.

Acronis if your looking for a paid solution with some extra features.

I think you made a good decision. I have 2 seagate externals and I use Macrium and free version of Acronis. If you have a western digital hard drive you can download their scaled down version of Acronis from their website or Seagate has one also on their website. I prefer Western Digital's but both will work. I won't use Memo. If you want to just copy user files, I like Microsoft's synctoy, and it's a really good price - Free.
