Memory leak?

Damn I thought the problem was fixed but last night I left my computer on without firefox open and whe I woke up 87% of memory was used up

I think I Might have to reinstall windows

the only programs I know were up was

Utorrent 2.02
Core Temp 0.99.5
Eset Smart Security
WD SmartWare

I'm now going through and uninstalling every program I do not need to see if one of those are the cause.

How do I set this Thread to not solved?

EDIT: I have finished uninstalling programs/Games I dont use. I should of made a list of the ones I uninstalled but I forgot. I'll leave my computer on for the day and see if the problem still happens.

Why not just quit each running program, one at a time over the next several evenings. I'd start with WD Smartware. Open Task Manager and quit the Smartware process, leave the computer on as before and check the RAM usage in the morning. Next I'd try Utorrent, Eset and then Core Temp.

While you're in Task Manager you might notice how many other processes you have running, especially those using high CPU percentage.

Much easier than uninstalling programs...

The annoying thing is when memory usage is really high no process visible in Task Manager or any other program is taking up much memory/CPU. I thought I might as well uninstall some programs/games As I really did need to clean out my computer lol. I'll update on whether the problem still happens or not.

I think someone already said there IS a problem with Eset Smart Security that has NOT been fixed. I would start by removing it and see if that fixes your problem. I know you said you have been running it for a long time and this is new. However the problem may take time to show its self and now you are seeing it.

uTorrent is also known for taking a lot of memory. It is kind of smart and will use more memory if you are NOT using the computer so that could be your issue too. You may want to see if after you are using your computer for 2 or 3 minutes the CPU % comes down, if so that could be because uTorrent has noticed you are on the computer and is giving back the CPU cycles.

I think someone already said there IS a problem with Eset Smart Security that has NOT been fixed. I would start by removing it and see if that fixes your problem. I will try uninstalling Eset but Eset shows that it isn't using much Memory/CPU in task manager. Also I thought Utorrent was known for it being so lightweight and taking up hardly any hard drive space/memory/cpu?

My issue was this: if I allowed JDownloader (a java app) to run over night, memory usage in the morning was between 70-80%. I asked about this on the JDownloader forums, and the general consensus seemed to be that, with respect to Windows 7, there's a problem between Sun and Microsoft that has yet to be patched; and at this point, neither party has even acknowledged the problem exists or is theirs... which is odd, since they apparently sorted out this issue with XP and with Vista.

I could, and still can, leave the machine on for weeks at a time with Nod32, and I have no memory issues whatsoever; but, I have not let the license expire so that may just be an issue that arises in the future? I'm not at all saying the experience of the others here does not apply. Let's be clear about that.

Like I mentioned before in my first post, Eset causes this problem on many different machines. This exact problem has been solved on several occasions by simply uninstalling Eset. No reason for me to make this up LOL. I've nailed this one several times in fact starting from over a year ago. This advice only works if you follow it.

I believe it's a conflict problem between the network drivers and Eset so it won't show up in the task manager as Eset using the memory, although it does need to be uninstalled to fix the problem.

I hope I was clear enough about that in my post? I did not mean to suggest that there isn't a problem with eset, only that I hadn't experienced it yet.

Is there a difference between eset's smart security, which is all inclusive, and just the eset anti-virus? I run just the anti-virus, optimized for gaming.

I've run BitDefender for years, but recently just got fed up with game mode not working right with Windows 7. It really made play terrible... so I've been on the hunt for a really good, yet unobtrusive AV. I've always been aware that eset kicks butt with the vb1000 awards, so I'm giving it a shot, and so far, it seems great. It did take a bit of tweaking though...

If you know of any other top notch av apps that cater to gamers, please, let me know. I've read the AV thread on the subject, but the opinions are so varied nobody seems to come to any agreement on what's the better product?

I dont usually leave any Java programs open while my computer Is idle. I sometimes leave Jdownloader downloading but a java program is not open in all the cases when my computer gets this memory leak

Sorry I put off uninstalling Eset because I was hoping it wasn't the problem as its a pain uninstalling and finding a new Antivirus etc. But as the problem hasnt been found I completely Uninstalled Eset but during Idle time the problem still persists

No but I have a Usb portable HDD Connected.

Problem Fixed. The Problem was Windows Defender. It was set to auto scan when PC was Idle and for some reason this introduced a memory leak or something. Just turning off auto scanning in windows defender Fixed the problem.
