I had 4x 1GB DDR2 6400 chips. Just swapped out 2 of them for 2GB DDR2 6400 chips. Task manager performance used to show 4 GB of memory, It now shows 3GB. I should have a total of 6GB now. I'm confused. Think I did the install right according to the board manual. Positions are:

Channel A DIMM 0 = 1MB
Channel A DIMM 1 = 2MB
Channel B DIMM 0 = 1MB
Channel B DIMM 1 = 2MB

These are placed on an Intel D975XBX2 Motherboard.

When I first booted after making the change, I got a message about the memory not being matched, and that it would lower my performance. No beeping though.

Any ideas what I might have done wrong?

Sounds like you need to run memtest86 Memtest86 - Download Page Run it through around 5-8 passes 1 stick at a time in the suggested slot. This will tell you if you have any bad sticks.

Are they all the exact same Ram modules or mixed manufactures or just size? I ask because this is never a good idea to mix size much less manufactuers due to speed, timings and Voltages can be different and cause problems
.
CPU-z will also help with identifying each stick CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting.
Their might also be a setting in your bios you need to change to allow windows to read all the ram.
The error might be due to the fact that the Ram is not supported for your board and it has automatically defaulted the speeds on the ram. Check with the QVL on the boards site. (Qualified Vendors List.) for sticks recommended for your board.
This should get you started. Please post screen shots of each stick in cpuid so we can see under memory slots what is reported.
At the bottom of every post are also releated posts to yours you can read throguh it might save some time.Thanks.

Problem Solved!

Thank you for the suggestions. It was a simple solution. I took the memory chips back out and swapped positions. I put the 1MB chips where the 2MB were, and vice versa. Fired the thing back up and it recognised the 6MB total memory.
