Hello All,

I did a fresh Windows 7 installation on a new hard disk drive on my laptop.I am using Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop. However, after installation the microphone seems to be behaving weirdly(volume has reduced).I see that the system is automatically adjusting the volume of the microphone(always reduces it). Also, Control Panel->Sounds->Recording shows 2 microphones and 2- High Definition Audio Device is written beneath both of them. One of them shows up as the default device and another one shows as not available.

The jack information is the only thing which is different between these 2 devices. One of them shows Digital Jack(currently set a default) and other one shows Front Panel 3.5mm Jack.I am not sure which is the actual device though making any one default doesn't seem to have a lot of difference.

Also, Yahoo Messenger is unable to identify my microphone and webcam.Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

P.S. - I don't have the audio driver CD's with me anymore :(

On a Dell, you must use the Dell provided sound drivers (and with a Laptop other Dell drivers) or the sound will either not work or not work correctly. Also there is a specific install sequence required for a successful install - (1) Install Windows (2) Install Dell Laptop (or Desktop as applicable) System Software (3) Install Motherboard Chipset Drivers (4) Install Device Drivers including Video, Dell Sound Drivers, Ethernet, etc.

Win 7 will install a lot of drivers but they can the incorrect drivers so on any device that is not working correctly, install the Dell drivers.

With the "Default Audio Playback Device", your Speakers (sound card) should be set as the default device for normal audio, such as the PC's speakers. It's probably not recognizing your microphone or other input devices because of the wrong sound driver.

You can go to www.support.dell.com and access the Dell downloads by your service tag number and get the applicable drivers for your system (as the PC was shipped).

Thanks for the reply. Installing the drivers did the trick :)
