Microsoft Lazer Mice Scroll Wheel Problems in Vista/W7

Hey all,

I have a Microsoft Ergonomic Laser Mouse 7000.

I really love the mouse, but I am having issues with the scroll wheel in certain apps (e.g. Cubase, Syncback, Digsby, audio plugins) since Vista.

Note: This does not happen with my old optical mouse. I never had this issue with any mouse in Windows XP.

I'll try to explain my findings, and would love any help to try and completely resolve the issue:

1) After a fresh install of Vista or W7 RC1, the scroll wheel does not behave correctly in these apps. You must spin EXTREMELY fast to make it move or it behaves erratically. After some research, I found that MS have implemented a "high resolution" scroll wheel behavior since Vista, which is obviously not supported by all applications.

I found this document on the Microsoft site which explains all the details:

The document suggests changing some registry values to disable this high resolution behavior. Thus I did just that and added the following 2 entries to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\HID\Vid_xxxx&Pid_yyyy\<instance_ID>\Device Parameters

VScrollHighResolutionDisable = 1
HScrollHighResolutionDisable = 1

This actually fixed the issue after rebooting, and I thought I had it all sorted.

2) I then thought it would be a good idea to install my Intellipont drivers (v7.0 beta for Windows 7) to get all the benefits of the mouse. The drivers are also very helpful because the scrollwheel is usually far too sensitive, and the drivers fix this.

Of course (just my luck) after installing the drivers, the problem re-appeared. The registry entry I had entered above was still in the registry too.

If you kill ipoint.exe and then disable / enable the mouse driver in Device Manager, the problem goes away. As soon as you start ipoint.exe again, the problem re-appears.

So the main thing I want to figure out, is how to disable this high resolution behaviour with the Intellipoint drivers installed.

Can anyone assist?

I have made an additional discovery today. This problem only starts after ipoint.exe is launched. If you disable ipoint.exe at startup and reboot Windows, the scroll wheel behaves correctly.

Thus, I am trying to find a way to set ipoint.exe to start without enhanced scroll wheel support.

If anyone can help at all, I really really would appreciate it.

The final Intellipoint 7.0 drivers released for Windows 7 suffer the same problem. Even Microsoft applications are affected e.g. Ctrl+Sscrollwheel to zoom in Word 2007 does not support the high resolution scrollwheel and the same behavior I mentioned above occurs.

Any help / experiences would be appreciated. I simply can not find a way to report this to Microsoft, I've looked everywhere!

Hi all, I can confirm that this also happens in Window Photo Viewer. The scrollwheel is usually used for zoom in & zoom out although it exhibits the same behavior as described above. You must scroll extremely fast to make it do anything.

I am attempting to get some support from Microsoft but this is proving difficult.

Would anyone please be able to confirm if this is happening to them or not?

The prerequisites for replicating are:

- A Microsoft mouse
- Newest Intellipoint drivers fully installed
- Running Windows 7 or Windows Vista

Steps to reproduce:

- Open a picture in Windows Photo Viewer
- Attempt to use the scrollwheel to zoom in and out
- Do you need to spin very fast to make it work? Or does it work normally?

If you would help me test this, I would be most greatful. Please also mention your mouse type. It may perhaps only affect certain mice.

This issue is really driving me nuts, and I'm thinking about going back to XP, which is a scary thought

don't ditch 7, ditch the mouse. i encountered this exact same issue when the beta came out. after finding the same forums posts you linked above and noticing the issue existed since the vista beta, i concluded there was little chance MS would bother fixing it now. so, not more than 2 weeks after i upgraded from a MS lazer mouse 5000 to a lazer mouse 6000 -- i shelled out $35 for a logitech mx620 which i caught on sale. it absolutely kills the MS mice feature wise; i particularly love being able to map keyboard strokes to the tilt wheel - which served completely no purpose previously.

Yep, I'm definitely considering grabbing a Logitech. I'll wait until the final W7 comes out and decide from there. I would just feel silly to throw away more money because Microsoft's hardware doesn't work with Microsoft's drivers, OS & software.

Anyway, I guess I'll make up my mind when RTM is released.

Funnily enough, my MS keyboard has been flawless.

P.S.: Windows XP is way way slower than W7 on my quadcore. I couldn't believe it, but startup time and application launch time was significantly faster on W7 RC1.

Have you tried the Win7 Beta mouse drivers?

They solved all my problems with a 5000 mouse and desktop elite keyboard.

I too have a 5000 the Windows 7 beta drivers didn't work the first try but did the second. A little buggy I believe.

I wish I could say the same, I have re-installed the drivers more times that you can imagine without success.

This exact issue occurs in Vista too, and I easily could replicate it on my friend's PC running Windows Server 2008 (not R2).

whether you notice this problem or not really depends on what programs you use. even with the 7 drivers scrolling is inconsistent/broken in some apps, but not others. the issue disappears only when the ipoint software is disabled. of course you lose all customizability obtained from the software - which is not an acceptable trade off.

Now that RTM is around the corner, I just wanted to bump this thread before buying a Logitech mouse. Has anyone found a resolution to the problem? I am still having it with the final Microsoft Intellipoint 7.0 drivers on W7 RC.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I have tried the stable 7.0 drivers with Windows 7 RTM and the issue still exists. Looks like I'll be grabbing myself a Logitech mouse soon.

If anyone else has experienced this issue or found a way around it, please let me know

Well my friends, I gave in and just bought a Logitech MX1100, just playing with it now. The good news is that scrolling works flawlessly with the Logitech mouse, and hyper scrolling just rocks as does the app switcher.

It does have a different pointer feel though, which I'm hoping I'll get used to.

The moral of the story, don't buy Microsoft mice!

I still got this problem, with intelipoint i have had some success by picking a profile of a similar mouse.... why has this still not been fixed!

Solution for Wireless Laser Mouse 6000

The solution that worked for my Wireless Laser Mouse 6000 (might work for others as well) was pretty simple:

- Install the latest IntelliPoint software
- During setup select your type of mouse (e.g. Wireless Lasermouse 6000)
- When the setup is complete, choose "Wireless Laser Mouse 8000" in the Intellipoint configuration window (drop down below the image of the mouse)

The buttons of the WLM 8000 are the same as the WLM 6000.
You might want to reduce the mouse wheel sensitivity.
After that the mouse wheel of the WLM 6000 (V1) worked fine on my Windows 7 x64.
