A history of the Windows logo

We have said that Windows 8 is a complete reimagination of the Windows operating system. Nothing has been left unexplored, including the Windows logo, to evaluate how it held up to modern PC sensibilities. The Windows logo is a strong and widely recognized mark but when we stepped back and analyzed it, we realized an evolution of our logo would better reflect our Metro style design principles and we also felt there was an opportunity to reconnect with some of the powerful characteristics of previous incarnations.

The retro thinking of Microsoft using this logo is utter crap. They got it wrong with Vista thinking they knew what we wanted and in my opinion they've done it again with this design of a so called logo. More than 60% of the users that will use the new OS have never seen win 98 or below so there is no justification in going old school and bringing back the old look.
Microsoft owe us just as much as we owe them, why not start a open competition where users can submit their designs and come up with something fresh and new that we can vote on and decide what we would like to see.
It would be a dam site cheaper than paying some marketing company thousands to produce the rubbish that they are showing us here.
I started my career as a logo designer for a very large company that produced corporate identities for some key businesses that are still huge players in our market place today and to be honest I have never seen such a poor rendition designed by such a large company in my life....

Soz for the rant, but I really am disappointed

PS. Microsoft might have some competition as I know a bloke down the road from me that has the exact same logo as the new win8 design but he cleans windows for a living ..... and has done for the past 20 years

that's what I suggested up above, they would get far more varied and interesting ideas that way.

if you look back to the origins of the logo you see that it really was meant to be a window. "Windows" really is a beautiful metaphor for computing and with the new logo we wanted to celebrate the idea of a window, in perspective. Microsoft and Windows are all about putting technology in people's hands to empower them to find their own perspectives. And that is what the new logo was meant to be. We did less of a re-design and more to return it to its original meaning and bringing Windows back to its roots – reimagining the Windows logo as just that – a window.

i quite like the new logo actually.

logos aren't meant to be flash and fancy - the best ones are very simple and recognizable at all sizes and on all printed media - even black and white. having lots of fancy colour gradients, reflections, drop shadows etc looks good on hi-res screens, but doesn't always print well.

here's my quick crap modification - it has the added benefit of looking anti-google. :devil:

a logo should be simple and quickly identifiable - this unfortunately lacks iconic vigor though

I don't know what it is with MS and graphics - the ms phone, metro, xbox, zune all lack something with their interface
