What a horrible move, many people are using 7 and don't want to upgrade to 8.(which in my opinion looks crippled) I assume newer games will still work with dx11.0 though since 11.1 doesnt sound major.

That's bad considering win7 is an excellent OS, shame they are that intent on shifting to win8, MS is starting to get on my nerves.

At some point the MUST rethink their marketing strategy. If Win8 don't works as they want they will be forced to do so, or everyone will stop upgrading their systems.

MS already has the Vista experience where everyone favored XP, I doubt they want another similar failure, and it seems that 8 is going to be the next Vista.

Microsoft will use every dirty trick in the book to try to get people off of Windows 7 and on to Windows 8. This is just the beginning. A few bad Windows 7 Updates and a story that Windows 8 doesn't have this kind of problem is in the future.

Not even wth Vista did they use this dirty trick, but the DirectX trick they did allright.
So far none of us own a DX 11.1 graphic card, and we still have to see if it is a rare product like ATI's Dx10.1 was, or if it really does matter in later games.

Microsoft, WE DO NOT WANT YOUR WINDOWS 8 IN ITS PRESENT FORM!!!

Speaking of AMD, a Radeon HD 7970 is a DX11.1 card.

Not much out there to exploit that, yet.

I never meant driving them to Win 8. All that keeps me from Linux now is it is difficult to impossible to run some of my software and hardware on it.

Have you tried a using a Windows VM?

I run all of my old XP games (and earlier) in an XP VM using VMware Workstation (on W7 and Ubuntu 10).
Only one of my games won't install in the VM (it insists on a real XP install ).

Microsoft will use every dirty trick in the book to try to get people off of Windows 7 and on to Windows 8. This is just the beginning. A few bad Windows 7 Updates and a story that Windows 8 doesn't have this kind of problem is in the future.

Just like Gadgets vs Live Tiles.

Microsoft has 90% plus of the market. I don't think it's worrying about Linux or the like. Windows 8 is competing against Windows 7 for market share. I know it does sound strange.

Don't forget that XP is still bigger than all other operating systems combined (excluding W7).

If MS creates an opening for some third party, rest assured if their is any bucks to be made they will step up and create something for the displaced people. I am sure MS realizes this and will try to protect their market share.

Was waiting to see when Microsoft would come out saying "NO DX11.1 AND UP FOR YOU, WINDOWS 7!", totally expected it. They did the same thing with DX10/11 in XP to encourage gamers and enthusiasts to upgrade to Vista and 7 (and it worked, regardless of 7 being awesome).

Also not expecting to see Microsoft go back on its words here. Windows 7 (let alone XP!) is dead to them and nothing but a nuisance now. I'm sure if they weren't obliged to support 7 until 2020 they'd drop support right this second.

As for the talk about moving to Linux: Doesn't solve the problem since DirectX and Linux don't mix. As far as gamers and anyone else reliant on DX are concerned, it's either Windows 8 or the highway.

I'm not really bothered about DX as I don't really need it but I've already been thinking about changing to Linux and quite a lot of others have said the same to me. Windows 8 isn't appealing to me so I'll stick with Windows 7. If Windows 7 is abandoned by Microsoft then I will move to Linux.

That sounds like DX 11.1 coming to Windows 7 for me.
I really trust Nvidia allot more, then some random MS employee ;)
