Microsoft says no DirectX 11.1 for 7 users

i was using linux for the past two years (explains my inactivity on this forum) and I would keep it if it wasnt for my games,a lot of my apps and visual c++ if WINE runs close to every windows program perfectly im switching back. but i doubt that will happen soon. i will probably have to buy windows 8 this christmas

I never meant driving them to Win 8. All that keeps me from Linux now is it is difficult to impossible to run some of my software and hardware on it.

Have you tried a using a Windows VM?

I run all of my old XP games (and earlier) in an XP VM using VMware Workstation (on W7 and Ubuntu 10).
Only one of my games won't install in the VM (it insists on a real XP install ).

Microsoft will use every dirty trick in the book to try to get people off of Windows 7 and on to Windows 8. This is just the beginning. A few bad Windows 7 Updates and a story that Windows 8 doesn't have this kind of problem is in the future.

Microsoft has 90% plus of the market. I don't think it's worrying about Linux or the like. Windows 8 is competing against Windows 7 for market share. I know it does sound strange.

Don't forget that XP is still bigger than all other operating systems combined (excluding W7).

No game manufacturer is going to drop support for 7 and earlier for the 13 people that have Windows 8 and like it. The same thing happened with DX10 and Vista. I wonder about Steam and their Linux project. It is certainly going to be a very interesting next few years. I am not budging from 7. I have it set up the way I like it. I have tried all the versions of 8 including the 90 day Enterprise trial and I think it is crippleware. My wife is still on XP Pro and sees no need to move to the 7 I have installed for her on a separate hard drive. The only time that gets use is when I update it every once in a while. They tried to kill XP with DX 10 but DX9 games were around for years. DX 10 and DX 11 really only took off when 7 became popular. By the time M$ had sorted Vista out (SP2) it had such a bad rap we stuck with XP. We tried 7 and we like it and that is it. M$ may have a 3 year product cycle but in the real world of car loans, mortgages, household stuff members of the public do not. As for businesses we all know that one.
You can read the post on here of posters who have tried 8 and can't wait to get it off their drives and reinstall 7.

Theres no important features on DirectX 11.1, Because Windows 8 is a new operating system.

OK, how about when DirectX 12 is out then?

What would you even get from DirectX 11.1? if DirectX 12 comes out, its completely different and a must have for Gamers and 3D Designers.

I guess that's possible (I know squat about Directx, other than games use it).

I notice that you only have 4 GB of RAM (like me).
My VMs struggle sometimes (lots of disc accessing).

Maybe more RAM might help.

First off all the hub bub about DX11.1 not being allowed on Windows (at this time) is really pointless. There aren't many DX11.1 titles on the horizon, and, if you've looked around, there aren't even that many DX11 titles out. And a lot of those are patched to DX11 after release. Anyway my take is DX11.1 will come to Windows 7 eventually as Windows 8 isn't likely to replace Windows 7 the way Windows 7 replaced the aging XP. Also note that Vista was released with DX10.1, but shortly after 7's release, it got upgraded to DX11.

And I would wait for official word from Microsoft themselves rather than the "I heard it from some guy" statement.

im not a gamer ,been using windows since win 3.11,i use both win7[with xp mode] and win8 2 different computers ,and don't have any issues with either OS's,really don't know what it is that people don't like about win8

Well, as I said earlier, I’m quite sure Windows 7 will be seeing DX11.1

BTW...

"Portions of the 'DirectX 11.1 Runtime' are being made available on Windows 7 Service Pack 1 via the Platform Update for Windows 7 Service Pack 1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (KB 2670838) included with the Internet Explorer 10 Release Preview for Windows 7," he writes. "This includes the updated components above, but is limited to WDDM 1.1 drivers on Windows 7."

This means you need to have service pack 1 installed. (for those still operating without SP1 installed) :shock:
