Ranger a new install will grab all updates including unneeded ones. Even more if the installer is not SP1.

Just got my 21 updates at 9:26Pm ET, installed no issues. I did 6, 8, then 7. IT irks me the Microsoft still thinks I need the Bing Desktop which I've hidden several times.

Thanks Britton. You are spot on as my installer was prior to SP1, which explains all my old updates.

I agree with you on the Bing Desktop, an item I absolutely do not want.

I have just completed all of my 24 updates without any problems.
I always do net framework updates first and always reboot. Then I do 3 or 4 updates at a time depending on the size and reboot whether it request a reboot or not.
The last ones I do are Office updates.then reboot and check for Updates again to make sure I got them all.
I just use the new KB Update Clean Up tool and removed 4.41 GB.
Rebooted again and checked for Windows Updates again and none were there. Things are still working as they should.

Just had 29 updates to do. Rebooted and system paused for about 10 minutes at 32% before restarting. Got to 32% second time round, long long pause, then finally the familiar Windows chime. Shuts down before logon screen appears. Boots up third time, long long pause while it "configures my system", Windows chime.....long pause....login appears, keyboard works, enter password, bingo!

Why do these Tuesdays have to be so fraught? It's "cross your fingers and hope I don't have to reinstall the image I made of my system last month" time whenever the updates ready notification pops up.

Layback, i do them the same way as you, i find if you allow them to all go on at the same time that is when you run into problems, i have done all my windows eight ones but , today i start windows 7. I have my 5 to do and i maintain 40 client computers remotely so i wait to see how mine do and those in here that comment, the only thing i do differently, i do the net framework last, and do the 3.5 first, then the 4 then the 4.5

I only reboot once and was like 20 updates for me. Computer is working fine also on my end.

I had 29 updates and 28 were selected by default, I just blasted through those and then did the remaining MSE Platform update.

All 26 on this machine and 29 on another went without a hitch for me ( in 3/4 batches, as usual) - and on interesting result was that in a XP machine, I actually managed to get some .NET updates installed that had been misbehaving for years! Unfortunately this simply moved the problem along the chain a bit and I still have a couple with problems.

The problem is confusing, to say the least.

KB 982168 installs OK - reboot and check for more updates, and it request KB951847. That installs OK, so reboot and check again - and it now wants KB 982168 again!

I've hidden both until I have time to play - it's an office fileshare server so I can't keep it offline too long.

I don't give the north end of a southbound furry little rodent if it is a new, improved version of Bing Desktop. If I've previously hidden it and have never installed it, that should tell M$ I don't want the misbegotten thing! And, in the past, it did; M$ has been acting desperate lately with the way it has been trying to RAM programs, etc. down our throats.

I just did the cleanup tool on my windows 7 sp1 desktop to see what would happen
It showed I had 6gigs of windows update cleanups.
It did the cleanup then went away (it does not even tell you to reboot)
but I rebooted anyway
now it stated- Windows is installing New updates
That took about 15 min
then it came up and said Windows is cleaning computer
it sat there for about 30minutes then finally went into windows 7

Is this suppose to happen?

Did I get 4 for Kernel-Mode Drivers 'cause I still have some Kernel updates hidden from Aug & Sept or did everyone?
Edit: And I see they brought back another hidden one, KB2834140 as Recommended but what I get out of all the reading I've done, is that it has something to do with IE 10 & KB2670838 which is Optional. Very confusing to a dummy. Oh, I have IE 9.

Would you believe that this is my 5th day of almost solid 6-8 hours trying to figure out what to go ahead with & what to keep hidden from the last 2 or more months updates.

Edit: And now my total for Oct. is 22!!

I did not do the ones for ie 10 and 11 because i am sticking with ie 9
I did all the kernal ones one one computer and prayed. It took a bit to install but it did. I am not sure if i am going to put them on my business computer yet, are 4 of them and i cannot understand why you need 4 kernal drive updates when it says it is for the exact same thing, anyone wanna explain why?

How we all look forward to this time of the month!

I installed about 20 updates on my gaming machine this morning, leaving just the MSE update to do separately when I'm satisfied that everything else is ok. So far so good. The updates included KB2862330 and I only had the usual single reboot, installing the lot in one go inside about 10 minutes.

This afternoon I applied the same updates to my work machine, but minus KB2862330 as this one was now unchecked by MS, presumably because it is causing double reboots on some machines and that can play havoc with the rest of the updates. I'll leave that one at least for now. I then separately installed the six Office updates, but have again left the MSE update for later.

On the work machine I've also left the Silverlight update for now as I didn't want to compromise the other updates, and I'm none too clear whether I need it. Does anyone have any strong views on that one, for or against?

Silverlight is basically the MS version of Java. Thus far I've only encountered a few MS site which say I need it to view the page properly. I leave it both uninstalled.

I've had Silverlight installed on previous machines and never had a problem with it. I don't have it installed on wither of machines now because, until recently, I never needed it. The one time I went to a web site that needed it, I blew off the site.

I just spent the last hour fixing my windows 7 64 bit after installing these updates it went like this 1 could not boot into the drive 2 could not repair start up with recovery after several attempts 3 disconnected all external devices apart from mouse and keyboard still could not repair it. so after about 10 times of turning off/on pc it booted up and took 30 mins to get to the desktop can't believe it.

That's why Patch Tuesday scares the h*** out of me. I don't know diddlysquat about what to do if I were to have a problem like that. That's why I'm such a PIA at this forum.

You think it's bad for Windows? Linux users usually get updates DAILY and they have a tendency to break things OFTEN lol. Talk about being paranoid

So, I gather that most people have installed all Oct. updates with no problems? It's been a week today & I'm still holding. As I said in earlier post, "wouldn't know what to do".

Was doing reading elsewhere & sounds like lots of problems with all or most of the Kernel & USB Drivers, that's why I always come back to this forum, my favorite.

I've installed all of them on 3 machines, the first two I did 6-7 at a time, rebooting before the next round. the last one I did all of them, 17 in this case, with no issues.

I had to hide the Silverlight installation every time, MS must really believe we need it. :huh:

I had no trouble with KB2862330 on both of my machines. Anything M$ leaves unchecked I leave until everything else has been installed, then install the unchecked ones.

You shouldn't receive Silverlight updates unless you have it installed (I don't—haven't needed it—and I don't get the updates). If you have Silverlight installed (and you probably do if you are receiving the updates), you should also install the updates to avoid potential security problems.
