Hello all,

I have installed Nod32 4.0, does MSE worth it? If so I will get it but I am always doubtful about the performance of AV freewares, even if they come from Microsoft Corp. :sarc:

I do find the new WU update format for MSE to be annoying. I liked downloading the files whenever I wanted, rather than having an annoying pop=up show up every morning I start my computer.

I have been following a thread at DSL reports about this topic - A user there got this from MS ' I had sent an email to the MSE support team and got a reply back today. In part, here's what they said....

From your case description, I understand that you are concerned about Definition updates on Microsoft Security Essentials which is done using Windows update. If I have misunderstood, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Tony, please be assured our developers do recognize this issue and are working on it. As this issue has been hard-coded in the program, it will take us some time to modify it. We appreciate your patience and understanding while we are working on this.

Main thread Microsoft Security Essentials only using Windows Update now? - dslreports.com

Hmmm...I didn't even realize Microsoft changed this because I have Windows Update set to download and install critical updates automatically.

And before we go there, I've been doing the auto updates for years (since XP) and never had an issue.

Same here .. I much prefer it that way to be honest! How very un-fashionable of us!!

Yes! I am getting it on every boot now....I have submitted a ticket to Microsoft, but as of yet no answer from them. If and when I get a reply I will post it.

OK we have a fix. After MS worked on my PC for 4 hrs they got it fixed. Go to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Microsoft Security Essentials\Support and delete MSSEOOBE.etl and reboot. After reboot this file should be recreated and the error should be gone. I have found that when you delete MSE this folder remains and the files get updated when you run MSE. It looks like the one file was not updating properly and causing the failure. After it was working I did another test. I deleted MSE and also all the files in the Support directory. I then reinstalled MSE and everything is still fine. If you look at the error under Detail it will point to this file.

Jim :geek:

Thanks Jim
This will go down in my special notebook for Win7
Iggy

WELL ITS BACK. Same OOBE error has returned. Had a note from another forum and someone there had it return also. I deleted the MSSEOOBE.etl file again and it cleared for the next boot but came back again. Was also getting event error about needing an update but I was up to date. So I have now DUMPED MSE and using AVAST. May give it a try if they come out with a new version, but for now Forget About It.

Wow this thread went dead.

Just wanted to update that recently, MSE has been updating itself w/o Windows Update annoying me each morning with an update. My MSE version is still 1.0.1961.0 but it all seems to be working how it should be.

I was also thinking the same thing about this tread.
I have been using MSE since December 2009 and I'm still impresses with how well it works.
Light weight, does the job and updates with little effort.
Still FREE from Microsoft and can't see why anyone would need to purchase annual licences each year for anything else.
This is still a true winner for MS.

Yes now MSE has been updating itself without having Windows Update pop up an annoying daily popup reminder. Looks like MS changed this internally because my MSE version is still the same. So its back to updating itself daily, on its own without intervention from the user. This is done regardless of the Windows Update setting.

MSE wound up on my Windows XP..I have no idea how this happened.. I'm guessing it was part of an update.. they didn't alert us .. what it was..
I already have , my own Anti-virus.. firewall..along with WinPatrol that knows if anything tries to add it's self to my pc.. I get an alert.
I had to uninstall WinPatrol recently then it began to happen...now whenever I reboot.. a folder pops up on my screen..MSE Security Essentials.. I've had NO luck at all un-installing it... even tho I've tried 3 things in their forum to get it off my pc..I tried the un-install.. the FixIt.. and the un-install again.. rebooted after I preformed each one...
What now ?

What exactly does the pop up say?? It might be a rouge. Does it say "Microsoft Security Essentials" or something similar??

Can anyone tell me what is better about NOD32 vs MSE and why pick NOD32 over MSE?

Thanks!

In my opinion, NOD32 is vastly superior. The reasons for this are many; detection rates are much higher with NOD32 (according to every AV testing site that I have ever read at least) To me, the level of detection is THE most important component when choosing an AV product. If the software can't keep malware out then it's ability to clean is irrelevant as far as I'm concerned. I have used NOD32 concurrently with the full version of Malwarebytes for many, many years and I have never been infected.
You will get many varied responses to this question. I strongly suggest that you read as many reviews and test results as you can to get a clear picture of the 2 products. Also, have a read of this: http://www.sevenforums.com/system-security/72070-whats-best-anti-virus.html

1) NOD32 - Malwarebytes - Winpatrol - Router - Windows 7 Firewall Combo
2) NOD32 - Malwarebytes - Winpatrol - Router - Comodo or other 3rd party firewall
3) ESET SmartSecurity (using their firewall) - Malwarebytes - Winpatrol - Router - Combo

Personally, I would choose option 1 but that's just me. It really depends on your individual needs which nobody knows but you. Any of the options you listed will do a fine job. Remember tho, you are the most important factor in keeping safe online. Your browsing habits will determine the level of security you need. No software is guaranteed 100% so it's up to you to keep yourself safe.

Jim hi.. I followed your instructions until.. the SEARCH Enhancement Pkg.. it's not there..that was part of this .. it did un-install ..on one of those things I tried to get rid of it.. however that screen keeps popping up.. when I long on dily or re-boot.
Is there some way to delete that pop-up screen or hide it ?.. would that make it go away ?
Thanks much :)

Ports :(3) USB 2.0, (1) HDMI, (1) VGA, (1) Headphone out, (1) Microphone in, (1) Ethernet LAN

•Fast Wi-Fi wireless and wired Gigabit Ethernet networking

I have no idea what all this actually means
Jim hello.. Yes it .. MicrosoftSearch Enhancment Pack.. ( it's a folder.. C:\.) this is the one.
I've tried 2 other suggestions to un-install or remove it.. again today when I logged in.. there it was again.
Thanks for your reply .:)

I found this online:
Open run and type in: regedit
Navitage to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SOFTWARE
Microsoft
Search Enhancement Pack
Choice Guard

From there, you should see a key with the product ID

Copy that id into the command below and put it in the run
command window

msiexec /x (product ID)

It proceeded to show me choice guard uninstalling and now, I no longer have
the window show up every time I log in

The command should look like this:
msiexec /x {299CF645-48C7-4FA1-8BCD-5CE200CF180D}

My understanding it is a part of Microsoft Live Toolbar or Messenger. Some have just removed the folder and others have deleted the complete Microsoft Live package and reinstalled.
