I tried to run the MSE scan and so far its taken 14 hours.
It appears to have stalled on ...........

c\windows\checksurv\v1.01\windows6.1-7601-x86\neutralcab-v2.cab.winsx1\manifest\x86..................
and hasnt moved for few hours.

Could this indicate a problem? Is is something I can delete?

This is the Toshiba Win 7 32bit that can download but not install sp1, no matter what, SFC scannow scans stop at 94% and t doesn't seem to want to back up either, never has.

chewtah your system specs show you have Avira installed.

Hard Drives One
Antivirus avira
Browser Google, firefox

I would recommend only having one anti virus program installed at one time on one computer.
MSE and Avira most likely are arguing with each other.

That's a good point, @LBB.

Also, @chewtah, it seems that you have many open, working threads here, in multiple different forum sections besides this one, e.g.:
here
here
here

It's hard to say for sure what's wrong with your system without more robust data (such as diagnostic scan logs) in ONE place (rather than in multiple threads).

But the sum total of your posts suggests that there may be serious problems with the system (integrity violations on sfc, inability to install SP1, possible hardware issues/thermal shutdowns, stalled MSE scans, etc.).

I respectfully suggest that it might be a good idea to take a step back and regroup.
You might want to proceed with a more unified troubleshooting scheme (hardware > OS > software) rather than juggling multiple, parallel forum threads.
It might be advisable to check your hardware first, because a bad hard drive or other serious problem renders everything else (e.g. corrupt OS) moot.

Or (if the hardware is good), you might want to cut your losses, back up your data and perform a reformat/reinstall of Windows.
Sometimes, that's the better part of valor and the best way to get back up and running.
There are many excellent tutorials here to guide you through the process (and many expert folks to help).

<just my 2 cents, and worth less>

And a Win7/64 Pro laptop; And a Win10/64 Pro desktop.
So,do I get rid of Avira? or just close it down when updating?
I'll try those things, I thought I was doing the 'start a new thread for each problem' maybe I mis-read something ( maybe since the day I first bought the computer)
I just tried to back up my data and it stops at 49% doing that too!

It won't update, backup, run Scannow, (stops at 94% or let me send the desktop log file to a zip file do I can post it in a new thread!(access denied)

Disconnect from the Internet

Disable MSE.

Uninstall Avira completely.

Restart the computer.

Enable MSE.

Connect to the Internet.

Update MSE.

Scan with MSE.

And MSE full scan worked this time in about 8 hours, three cheers for Usernamesissues.
I really hope the answer has not been something I knew of for years, but thought wouldn't work.
