Solved Microsoft Security Essentials Support

A few of my friends who are still running XP are getting messages that when XP support ends, they will also no longer get updates for MSE. I thought I read that updates for XP-MSE would continue for another year. Any thoughts.
If the above is true, what FREE Anti Virus would you recommend?

It's not the antivirus that's going to save x-p users,
It's the supply of win-7 Professional,
The more you wait the more at risk you'll be,
An out of date os is a hackers dream = too easy

Please keep in mind that a updated anti virus program is not enough security for XP. To be as safe as you should be on your XP System it will also need Windows XP Updates from Microsoft which no longer exist.

They said in another place that they would provide MSE updates until mid 2015 for XP. But MSE is not much of an AV program anyhow and for the cost of e.g. Norton, you might as well buy Windows 7 for $69.99.

MSE updates will continue until 2015. But both Microsoft and the suppliers of other AV products have said that the effectiveness of AV software is much diminished on an unsupported OS. As time passes that situation will only get worse. It is also questionable how effective this software can be when confronted with modern malware which in recent years has become VERY sophisticated. The producers of modern malware are highly skilled, very motivated, and well supported. It is not just the home hacker anymore.

My dad has an old laptop running XP and MSE and cant be upgraded.

Is the upshot of this that he'll need a new laptop ASAP and not safe using it after Support ends?

It depends on what your dad does on this laptop and what you feel comfortable supporting.

I've moved some of the people that I support to iPads.

Others have opted for a new laptop, but installing Linux is an option for older hardware.

Well he doesnt use it for much other then a bit of web browsing few music downloads and burning small MS word stuff and paying utility bills and credit card off which is what hes concerned about if they are more vulnerable now.

Its taken me years of constant calls to get him to leans the basic stuff with Windows so doubt a new OS will be the answer lol
Dont think he'll want an iPad thouhg so maybe is time for laptop upgrade

For someone who does not want to learn new things, there is little help. A new laptop will come with Windows 8.1 which may actually be easy for your dad since he does not use a lot of apps. But doing financial things with XP will be a problem from now on.

General discussion would be fine. We are not that strict on the categories anyhow. Some forums are iffy if you post in the wrong subforum, but in general that is not the case here. Only 'garbage' should go into Chillout.
