Microsoft Security Essentials?

I've just completed a clean install of an Acer PC using its Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade DVD (thanks to this community too: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/31402-clean-install-upgrade-windows-7-version.html).

Now it's time to add few useful programs systems will use for security.

I've asked for a suggest on an other community where an expert user (seems he wrote also many wiki articles) answered me to use "Microsoft Security Essentials" only.

Now, I'm not a windows user since many years ago, but a friend asked me if I could re-install Win-7 on its pc, by now slowed down due to many bad apps and so on...
So, I don't know if MS security is a good choice or just it "sucks" compared to other third parties alternatives.

I'd glad if you could give me a feedback for that product.
Thanks in advance!

I know very few technical details in comparison to what that expert likely knows, but I whole-heartedly agree. I switched to Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) quite some time ago and have never looked back. There is no such software that is perfectly able to catch absolutely everything, and there is no better security on the internet than in having good-and-safe clicking habits for staying out of trouble -- no click = no trouble -- in the first place. But MSE does as well as any in an overall sense and it can do that without dragging your machine down.

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
I would not recommend MSE unless your willing to purchase Mbam premium
The lifetime licenses for mbam = Malewarebytes have just about dried up but you might get lucky in finding one somewhere last I checked Amazon no more were available,

With that said I would lean towards either Panda or "hold my nose Avast" :p
But Do Not download Avast from CNet ;)

I am currently using BitDefender on my personal laptop, and used to use Avast. I like both products well enough. Neither have stood out to me more than the other, but both have worked just fine, caught certain things, etc. I would say try them out, see which one you like the best, and go with it. There's obviously people who are going to swear by certain AV's, me personally I love Norton, but I just don't feel the need to pay for it, so I don't use it. I usually give an AV a year, and test out a new one if I see improvement from the people who make it.

I took a look to that topic before open this one, but it's about 100 pages long and it's first page seems out of date...

Anyway I'm looking for a Free (as in beer) suite.

Last time I had set up a windows system on a machine in a no-profit association office, I chosen Comodo Internet Security. And after some click to configure its behavior It's working fine until now...
Anyway performance request of these suites are visible: pc seems smoother if you don't install any antivirus nor antispyware at all.
So I've thought that WSE could be a lighter choice than other solutions.

Why exactly would WSE need an other software like malewarebytes?
Could you explain better ThrashZone?

Thanks for answers folks!

Hi,
You mean MSE ;)
Mostly because it sucks,
I wouldn't use Mse without mbam pro/ premium.
Most threats today are malware which mse does not know what the hell that is,
Most Antivirus suite don't.

Guys, avoid mixing products & purposes :) Anti-Spyware/Malware and Anti-Virus are not the same thing. Although many security programs are becoming Swiss Army Knives again, let's remember:
-- if we want Anti-Virus, MBAM, EAM, Spybot, SpywareBlaster, SUPERAntiMalware programs are not it
-- if we want Anti-Spy/Mal-ware, Avast, Avira, AVG anti-virus programs are not it
Avast, Avira, AVG, Spybot2, Comodo, and several others are selling Swiss Army Knives [ie Internet Security suites]; please make sure what your are getting for free or fee is what you need, is aimed at the right target.

For an user having standard human intelligence about online risks, MSE as real time protection and MBAM freeware as a scanner is enough.

Spywares are never of attacking nature, they are invited by the attacked user. If one can stay away from inviting a spyware, special protection is not needed.

But if they want to play online rummy, search for porn, download torrents, and follow all links supplied by unknown facebook friends, they may need to spend some money on security suits. And I call them irrational computer users.
