I find both less than satisfactory.
I don't believe there is any way to do that.
Why don't you try a 3rd party application?
In my opinion, Win Defender is near the bottom of the list as far as security software goes.

hi

what you dont seem to realise is that defender is not an AV, it only looks out for spyware, thats why MS introduced MSE, thier "true" AV.
Upon installation it automatically dissables defender.

Torchwood is correct.
Windows Defender is built into Windows 7 and is not an antivirus app.
Microsoft Security Essentials 4.10.209.0 is a third-party antivirus app.
When MSE is installed, WD is disabled.

Dynentan:
I'm surprised you dislike Microsoft Security Essentials.
It's very easy to install and set up, and it's very user-friendly and does a good job, and its definition files are updated every day.
I still use it in my Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit (up-to-date to July 2020) computers.
I will continue to use it until it stops doing a good job and no longer provides definition updates.

Not just the definition files, the scan engine gets regular updates too. Dynentan may not like the look of the MSE UI, but under the bonnet it is using exactly the same scan engine and definitions as Windows 10 does.

My MSE got a scan engine update last week, engine version 1.1.17200.2. Updated at the same time and and to the same version as my W10 machine.

Personally, I've never thought much of Window Defender (use as baseline for my antivirus tests), or Microsoft Security Essentials
I run 3rd party free apps. Never, ever been infected with malware, adware, or spyware and I surf the net regularly.

And here's that same engine being used on Windows 10. Sharing the same engine and definitions means MSE should be as effective as the Windows 10 security, at least it will be until MSE updates stop in 2023.

Microsoft will continue to release signature updates (including engine) to service systems currently running Microsoft Security Essentials untill 2023.

you do not need kaspersky or bitdefender if you have windows backed up with a program like aomei or macrium..! very often the programs you mention will cause more problems than they solve.

yes, its a good program for sure, but i guess i have just gotten so used to the old icon and interface with windows defender.. so i was mostly looking for a way to get the benefits from microsoft security essentials without losing the icon or the interface of windows defender, but i guess thats not possible.

Hi

its great to have a DAILY back-up, as you said, but why leave yourself open to exploitation in the first place not a good idea

How did you arrive at that conclusion?
If your bios becomes infected, & yes it can.
Backups and reimaging your drive does nothing to remove it!

I agree. It is a bad idea not to have antivirus UNLESS you are completely disconnected from the internet and use no external media. Multiple studies have proven that. Viruses can cause way more damage than the issues of having an antivirus.
