Microsoft slates 25-patch Windows update for next week

Double-digit Patch Tuesday to target flaws in Windows, Office and Exchange

Computerworld - Microsoft today said it would deliver 11 security updates next week to patch 25 vulnerabilities in Windows, Office and Exchange.

"Big day next Tuesday," said Andrew Storms, director of security operations at nCircle Network Security, of the patch news.

In its monthly advance notification, Microsoft spelled out next week's double-digit Patch Tuesday, which is entirely in line with company's pattern of alternating large- and small-sized updates, said Storms. "This fits with what we expected," he said, "a double-digit bulletin [Patch Tuesday] and double-digit CVEs."

The latter, for Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures, is the identifying number each individual vulnerability receives when it's logged into the public CVE database. "We get this up-and-down from Microsoft now."

I won't have to worry about imaging the drive since that will soon be wiped once moved into a new build as a secondary. That will provide a few weeks to see how things go with the latest on.

Sheesh...I hate these massive patch weeks. I run the WSUS system at my office and reading up on watching all of these patches to ensure they are safe for the corporate network takes up quite a bit of time. Guess I won't be bored this week.

The overwhelming majority of my work desktops are Vista and XP. Windows 7 is the minority as it stands now.

fair enough, i was just pointing it out, because when i read the title i got the impression that it was 25 patches for windows 7

When first seeing the title here it sounded more like one update patching 25 security holes rather then numerous items to download. Just last month MS released a patch for 12 holes found in IE 8.

"The good news is that Microsoft is fixing two outstanding bugs," Storms continued.

Two is a lot less and more believable for 7 from just having run 7 since beta over a year now. The cross version part with 25 total is quite believable there especially with XP.

Auto updates! Never here!

The updates always include something already on being the latest for video, sound, and a tuner card where download and install of that means removing the application and tuner driver to start all over. The update always trashes a working installation on that!

I end up turning all automatic update options off since you can be running a full screen program and have a popup prompt for an update cut right in! That goes a little bit too far when seeing that!

The first thing I did when my installation was complete was turn off automatic updates. I have mine set to notify me when updates are available. I download and install them after I have reviewed them.

On my home computer, I have just left Automatic updates enabled. And knock on wood, but my problems with this practice has been very few and far between. And in the event that this does cause a problem, I figure that is what "restore points" are for and I could just use one of them. But I'm not knocking you...knowing what is going on is an excellent idea.

I have already had two problems with updates. One I fixed by simply uninstalling it. The other required using a restore point. I also don't install updates for things I never use and have no plans to use. I hide those.

I install them all...unless they have a very known problem. Just because I don't use something now, doesn't mean that in 2 months I might not be utilizing that functionality and forget about some patch that I hid 2 months ago. Plus, I never know what applications are actually doing behind the scenes...so it's possible that a third party application might make use of something that I would have never thought of.

Just checking for updates again the same 35 optional language packs for 7 and that same old stubborn update for the tuner card is what comes up!

When you have accessories like tuner cards and other addons installed you first want the chance to review just what updates are available and then decide from there which will go on. Since 7 is the new version only out for so many months you can expect several more before SP1 arrives.

For the unattended system like you have there without the extras most of the time you shouldn't run into any problems unless one just happens to see a bad install or the IE connection is disrupted somehow during the download/install where you have to redo it over again yourself.

Things like the language pack updates and turner card updates are the very things I hide and don't install. I have no plans to watch TV on my computer. I can turn around and watch an HD big screen if I want to watch TV - which I rarely do. If I should ever need these updates, I know how to find and install them.

These are typically the optional updates you simply set aside if you have no use for them. With some tuner cards there's a certain way to install the driver set during the setup of the application where both mesh. A separate installation of the drivers once the app is on reverse engineers everything.

When first seeing a fresh install of 7 go on I still avoid the one for the tuner card for that reason while other optional updates are for things like onboard sata controllers and necessary to have. The new build fortunately will have all 7 drivers already available at the board manufacturer's support site ruling the need for the optional out completely once set up.

Gotcha...I don't do any optional updates or any driver updates from Windows update. I do only the critical and the security updates. That might be the reason that I typically haven't had significant issue.

Typically I look at the optionals first when installing Windows for things like chipset, sata controller drvers that are found right away while not on the Asus support site for the 64bit 7. A check a few weeks later actually shows if any new ATI Catalyst is out since the driver set will see the newer number on that as well.

Other then that the rest is found direct at a manufacturer's support site for things like addon cards and printers. As time goes the one remaining for hardware is simply the one for the tuner card and 35 language packs that simply get skipped over.

Often if I leave it set at auto update here I get prompted for updates that are already on. That's when I say ok I'll simply set it to never and run the checks myself.

My Windows has, besides language packs, all available updates (including optionals and drivers) applied usually as soon as they appeared on Windows Update. I have never got a single issue so far. Am I lucky?
