Microsoft stop offering MSE definitions in Windows Update?

Does MSE still work ? I've just manually updated MSE from the microsoft website, and it says its fine, but should i switch to Windows Defender? I have that already but its not running. SHould i turn it on and MSE off? Is this the same as Microsoft defender?

I also have MsMpEng running which i think is anti malware which uses up a huge amount of memory and often makes the laptop go crazy.

I have another win7 laptop which has Norton on it but as i dont intend to subscribe, is it ok to uninstal that and make windows defender the default? Thanks for any info

Although the WU definition update MSE still updates for me automatically by itself. Don't go with Defender. On 7 it isn't a full antivirus program but anti spyware. It is an antivirus only on 8 and higher.

I believe Norton doesnt support 7 anymore, so i thought i would dl MSE for my other laptop running w7. Is there a safe place to download MSE? i've seen it on softronic but is that safe to download from?

Although Microsoft have removed the MSE download pages from their servers, they have been preserved in the Internet Archive Wayback Machine. You can download from there. You will find a choice of two mseinstall.exe to download, the larger one is for 64-bit W7, the smaller for 32-bit.

While MSE is a very good AV/AM app, if you are having trouble with it, or feel it's too shaky to download, Avast still supports W7. The free version is quite good. Only hassle is you have to put up with frequent attempts to frighten you into spending money. Even if you get the paid version, it doesn't stop, they want you to keep buying more protection.

I don't remember for sure but I think I got it from Windows update. That was over 2 years ago so my memory is fuzzy.

Thanks very much, installed MSE and various updates. I've never used avast, but i did in the past use AVG free, which perhaps is still free, rather than just a 30 day trial. I still have internet explorer 11, which i've read is still necessary to have on win7 to receive any updates, although since i usually manually update them by dl the mpam or mpas files, perhaps it isnt, anyone know? I normally use chrome or firefox for the net but i believe chrome, edge and ie11 are no longer safe for win7 to use on the net. AIUI i need to dl firefox 115 esr for 64bit, but i'm not sure how to get it. I found this pag on mozilla,

You might want to try R3dfox. It's a fork of firefox that's still being updated. Firefox 115 on the other hand goes out of support next month. Release r3dfox v147.0.1-1 for Vista+ . Eclipse-Community/r3dfox . GitHub

No. But you must have TLS 1.2 enabled for definitions to auto-update, and Windows Update gets unlocked on the side.

I did a clean install of Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit in a 4th generation PC last week.

After it was set up and updated, I installed Microsoft Security Essentials 4.10.209.0.

It still accepts and updates the definition files.
