MSE Definitions Won't Update - Says Connection Failed

Win 7 Home Prem SP1. Trying to update the Virus and Spyware definitions in Microsoft Security Essentials, (which was last updated on my laptop in August), and it goes through the normal steps, Checking for Updates, Downloading Updates, Installing Updates. Takes about the usual amount of time for all this, (a couple of minutes), then says "Virus and Spyware definitions - Connection Failed".
Below, it has a bit more detail, saying: "The virus and spyware definitions didn't update on 11/11/20 7:56 AM because of an internet or network connectivity problem."
I have tried multiple times, on several days recently. There are no issues I can detect with my home WiFi network, it is the same one I have had for years.

How are you trying to update MSE Definitions? Windows Update?
Do you have any other updates through Windows Update to install?
Are your date & time correct? If incorrect, that is a common error message.
