Microsoft has just released a beta of a system recovery software. Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper has been designed to aid users in starting an infected PC and performing offline malware scans to remove viruses, trojans, rootkits and other forms of malware effectively. It is also used if malware is hindering the user to install or start an antivirus software on the infected system, or if the applications used to detect malware are not able to find the malware on the PC.

Hello Bonni,

Did you use the same 32-bit or 64-bit of Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper to create the bootable ISO, CD/DVD, USB on your computer for the 32-bit or 64-bit computer's OS that you running the scanner on? You would use the 32/64 bit Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper for the 32/64 bit computer that you will be scanning at boot with.

Yes, I used my 32-bit OS for both creating the bootable USB-stick and testing thr tool.

I downloaded and installed the x64 on a USB drive and scanned. Worked out fine.

Although even though it says it just needs 250MB worth of space on a USB drive (which kind of implies it doesn't need to format it), it still needed to format the USB drive even though the drive was already bootable. So that was a little misleading.

And I specified what Drive to scan when I booted into the program when it asked, but it still scanned all my drives.

Guess one needs to still go into the Tools/Options of it and exclude what drives you don't want scanned.

Looks and acts just like Windows Defender. Even says "Windows Defender" when it boots up.

Sounds like Microsoft is getting even deeper to stop the bad things from happening. If it still happens, a free tool to help you out. Yes it's in Beta, but doesn't most things start that way? I would like to thank all those who use Beta and all the testing so the rest of us get a great program.

I wonder if other programs can be added to run other types of software like Macrium or Malwarebytes. Also does it support USB3 for extenal drives.

D/L'd the 64Bit version, and installed it on a DVD drive. Ran quick test, 8 minutes, 51k items, No issues.

My cousin has an infected PC, I'll get this on my USB drive and try it out on his PC. I'll post the results in this thread. May take a few days, I don't visit him often.

Yes it is a repackaged Windows Defender although mine did say Microsoft System Sweeper on the window title. It seemed to take as long to load as a Win 7 install from a USB but went quickly to updating, processing and formatting. Too bad it has to reformat with each install, You'll need a separate USB drive for X86 and another for the X64 version.

Yes Aaron, the options will let it exclude drives/folder from the scan.

It took a bit more than 40 Minutes to scan about 29GB of data and the Win7 OS. Apparently this has been out for awhile since the help file gives instructions on how to scan a system other than Vista, no mention of 7. Seemed odd for a beta release.

Maybe I'm a little short on basic PC knowledge. When I installed the program to the USB drive, it was "F", and I chose to scan "C". When the scan ran it was scanning drive "E", is this normal? Whatever drive the system boots from is considered C:\?

As I posted in post #3 the program didn't run on my PC. It stopped with an error message after installing the necessary Windows files.
Is the possible reason for this behaviour that I'm running a German Windows version?
