Really, which part? They have already tried it once and said they were sorry we did it in error!!!

Interesting how it has never happened with any of the other 200+ W7 updates (on my PC).

I really do wish I had taken a screen shot at the time but I was more concerned about fixing the machines than taking pictures.

Microsoft have moved the goal posts, changed the rules and absolutely can no longer be trusted.
You will log on as part of the upgrade process accept the agreements and either finish the update to 10 or after much disk crunching and are you sure? return to your original OS. I frankly don't care if no one believes me but I have warned you. The comments on The Register from IT professional make interesting reading how Microsoft fan boys have been turned into loathers and haters.

You stated you're set to download but ask to install imho that is what got you into trouble.
That and the M$ Oops which did the rest
But your settings invited the download.

I would've thought anyone concerned about Microsoft pushing updates they don't want would change that.

Don't even open the door for them by letting them download.

That is how it is set on all of them 12 now. I fixed it that night. It was never a problem until this month. It is also possible my settings were changed by this:
KB3083710 changes your update settings from check for updates but let me choose when to download and install them to install updates automatically.

They sent that patch out October 12th.
As far as I remember updates used to tell me there were updates (Yellow Shields) and then it downloaded and updated my machines.

That works fine for users that have a clue.

Even if one did have a clue, a small business (~20 computers) would expend considerable resources touching each computer for each round of updates. What would be your recommendation for them?

Unfortunately, the same thing if they don't want W10.

They are going to be spending resources trying to avoid or back out of it anyway.

Good question. Personally I would expect them too, I haven't used those myself.

I do check every now and then looking for this forced download but it hasn't showed up yet.

I even had it reserved for about 3 weeks after the 7/29 release, still have the GWX icon in the tray

Thinking about it though, that should be the better option in the scenario you mentioned.

So basically you can set your PC to only download updates when you want them and M$ send out KB3083710 changes your settings to allow the download and update to 10 no matter what your settings are. Registry included. When they throw the update to 10 switch this update KB3083710 allows downloading of all the updates required to upgrade to 10 and downloads and starts the update process. Then you end up like I did almost on 10 or if you were a normal user oh look I got 10.
Of course the next time it will probably have a different number.

I really hope that MS honors those registry settings. I support way to many people (elderly and non-profit offices) to do their updates manually.
