If they decide one day that your install key is no longer valid - and a new install of Windows 7 suddenly will not activate - there is little you can do about that.

I am almost sure that would be illegal in the U.S. and possibly other countries. Yes, you lave a license to use it. However, the purchasers intent was to buy legal windows 7 sp1 retail disk or legal windows 7 sp1 oem device. If an operating system is going to expire, you are to be notified before purchasing the item(s). Disclaimer-I am not a lawyer.

I did a survey from Microsoft the other day. All sorts of questions about how I feel about Microsoft. For every question where I was allowed to type something in, I placed the words:

"I hate that Windows 10 is being rammed down my throat."

I left my email address at the end of it. I wonder if a representative will contact me? :lol:

Understood - they "should" notify you. - they will not take the time to notify you with some official letter in which you can review at your leisure. There is no option to say No - forever.

I agree - as a licensed Windows 7 user - I "should" be able to use my purchased license uninterrupted until the end of time.

But MS - does not care to ask me, inform me or do anything to allow me to continue using my license without my mounting of a non-stop campaign here at the house to ensure that Windows 10 does not slip onto any machine via the side door undetected and take out a perfectly good Windows 7 install

It is not as simple as notification, they would have to pay you money for the os disk or the computer you purchased with windows 7 pre-installed.

My windows 7 oem slp can not be deactivated unless they want to deactivate people who have upgrade to 10. Clarification, I mean those people who upgraded from windows 7 oem slp to windows 10.

I will use 7 as long as I want or when MS prevents it. I can always go to Linux. Which has it's advantages.

Yes Wolfgang, it's basically the same as the 30 Day grace period for a new install before you have to activate to keep things legal

The reset has to follow the pre-set procedure to ensure that the old licence is re-initialised but Microsoft is usually very accommodating, when genuine issues occur

Yes, your are correct if it is a OEM, system builder oem, or a windows 7 retail disk (Not sure about the MSDN versions). If it is a Oemslp, it won't deactivate. The reason, this pre-activated key is used on several windows 7 machines. If they deactivate an oemslp key, it would deactivate a lot of peoples machines whether they upgrade to 10 or not. Microsoft had a restriction that you could only upgrade from windows 7 oemslp install to windows 10 but you couldn't do a clean install. The work around, was to change your key to what is on the back or bottom of the machine, then upgrade. However, according to another poster you can now use the oemslp key for a clean install of windows 10 without having to do that.

Nope... sadly, OEMslp cannot be used to do a clean install, you gotta upgrade and then do a clean install, I can certify that by myself, I had to do that in order to activate W10... Even the method Brink posted on W10 forums for using the genuine ticket don't work...

MS changed the rules,
As you said ALL pre-activated OEM'S can now upgrade to W10, but not clean installs,
WITHOUT the need for the COA sticker code, Its called (and activated as) digital entitlement.

The COA key is redundant in this case, but not blocked,
and can be still be used to do a first time clean install.

Yes, but I didn't understand his post until I re-read it.

Here is how I understand it now,
Windows 7 Oemslp must be upgrade to windows 10 first, then you can do a clean install of 10 no key needed.

Well, because my PC has an old worn out, old fashion graphics chip the auto upgrade did not want to run, so I down loaded and mad an ISO DVD and the newer graphics driver, so all went okay. What a crock. Where did the fancy driver updates go with an upgrade? Oh well, don't bother; it's the new Microsoft, huh? I just w9onder what is in store for us after the July deadline?

If someone upgrades their 7 install to 10 does that mean that the 7 serial can't be used anymore? Does M$ deactivate it? I have a retail upgrade license.

The old licence should be deactivated by Microsoft, otherwise the users could upgrade and then re-use the old number to install another Windows 7, and Upgrade that OS ... Ad Infinitum ...

I say should as Microsoft will not necessarily deactivate the licence immediately, to allow for the small number of users who decide to downgrade back to the previous Operating system.

There are of course the standard licensing checks that run every 90 days and this will likely be the method used to de-activate licences
