Hi there,

I have probably posted this thread in the wrong area, however, I was just wondering. I get aching slow internet (59Kbps download) and this is due I think to a 5 mile copper cable to our nearest fibre optic point. A friend and I in our village are getting fed up and he is struggling to do work. We were wondering whether microwave technology would work. The only thing is I don't have a clue how it works, what needs to be bought etc. Could somebody please help me??? Any help would be much appreciated.

P-2-P Microwave relay is out of the question for a home user... unless you just won a lottery or a large inheritence!

Check with all ISP competitors in your area! 59kbps is unacceptable for a broadband internet connection... barely faster than old modems! What type of service do you have currently? Cable, DSL, or Fiber? Who provides the service to you? What speed are you paying for?

Firstly don't know speed, 5 miles of copper cable to nearest fiber point. However, I think speed is supposed to be higher. The village/council would hopefully fund it is we got people to complain about it. I was thinking dish from last fiber point 5 miles of visual sight to top of village windmill or church, maybe new wind turbines that are going up in the next year? then each house have a dish to receive data from the windmill, turbine etc. The other option is to run a cable from the dish on windmill... to each house, will defintely improve connection. What do you guys think??? We are paying Zen but it is BT broadband and I don't think that it is my router. Also, we aren't going to get fibres in our village for a long time, I think we are low down on the list, only got broadband about 7 years ago I think. Anyway, please tell me what you guys think!!!

That looks very expensive for a home user!!! The idea of the microwave dish was to cut out the massive copper cable. I thought maybe you could then just connect the receiver dish to the cables going to our houses. This is not on an individual scale, I am doing this for a village of 400 or so!!! Apparently there is a company in Rutland, that is all I know and apparently they aren't too expensive! Obviously you guys think differently!!! My neighbour says he gets 1.3mbps up the line, i get 59kbps when I download a file, google chrome tells me the speed at which it is downloading. Still interesting to here others thoughts though, so please do keep them coming!!!

Satellite is not much faster and it is very expensive to install... here in USA installer must be certified by FCC because any satellite dish is a "broadcast station" in the eyes of FCC! You are transmitting to space and receiving!

Your village got ripped off, sounds like the village elders made a decision they were uneducated on! Have them contact the ISP and all of you complain!
