Migrating from 32bit to 64 bit windows 7- OS On C: data on D:

Hi - new member, but have used search tool, couldn't find exactly the info I need.

I'm upgrading my motherboard, processor and memory on my custom built PC, currently running 32 bit Win7 on a 32 bit processor. New processor will be 64 bit so want to upgrade win 7 to 64 bit too.

I know I can't upgrade the OS directly, and have to do a fresh install and reinstall all my programs etc.

My OS is on C: drive and all my data ( photos, videos, docs) are on D: drive. It's the family computer and there are 4 profiles, all with their docs on d: ( users folder is on d

So there's no need to do a windows easy transfer of all the docs, I just want to back up my program settings, registry entries etc. then install the new OS, then reinstall programs, then restore the settings which point at all data being on D:

What's the best way to do this?
Should I upgrade the hardware first and run it on 32 bit until I'm comfy with it?
Would it be better to go straight to windows 8?

Why would you install Windows 8 unless you have a touchscreen? Win7 is much better.

Your data should be backed up before doing a 64 bit Clean Install Windows 7.
Create your customized partitioning at Steps 7 and 8 after deleting all partitions.
Then as you probably already know use this method to move User Folders - Change Default Location .

If you want to try it you could leave the data partition intact, then just link to the existing folders afterwards with that tutorial, or rightclick each to add to the related User Library - Include a Folder , setting each as default.

If you need the 64 bit installer to use with your current license since you're entitled to use either and reinstall as often as you like, it is provided in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 along with other tips that will assure a perfect install, even for retail.

As the new MOBO's now have a uEFI/BIOS firmware.

Thanks guys, it was the bit about moving default locations of user files that was my main concern.
