Using an old outdated version of a Web-browser is a security risk and not recommended!

When did your bookmark icons disappear?

Version 56.0b9 is not a slightly old version of Mozilla Firefox.
It's an extremely old version.
The current version is 78.0.2
Using such an extremely old version will leave your computer wide open to security exploits.

Glad to hear you agree, as I assumed you would.
That version is prior to the introduction of Firefox Quantum.

thats not helpful the slightest bit, especially when i already gave a reason and said i dislike the latest version
please stop posting if you are not going to be helpful in any way what so ever, its incredibly frustrating for users to have their threads hijacked like that..!
people are here to seek help with their questions, so either participate in that or stop posting all together
thanks

I have been trying to be helpful.

You ask for help we try to give it and you complain.

We provide free assistance to try to help you with your computer.

If you wish to respond with posts like that, good luck with your computer problems is all I can say.

On another post you made us well aware you do not protect your computer from malware, you don't run a reputable antivirus, no anti-exploit, no anti-ransomware.

Malware is well known for deleting restore points, exactly as you have described. It also causes many other issues, many of the same issues you are posting problems for.

Have a nice day and good luck with your plethora of computer problems.

Snick

i was able to solve this by reinstalling firefox
but i would like a better solution, so i dont have to go through all the problems that comes with reinstalling firefox
also, i noticed that sometimes it would help to bring back bookmarks by clicking on the cookies message that asks you if you want to accept cookies
i didnt get this message because i had this addon installed

i should probably also mention that sometimes on some websites, if you add your bookmarks with https first it will bring back the bookmark, but it will also cause some other websites to not load correctly
its a bit of a mess, but most of my bookmarks are okay

When I'm on a page I wish to bookmark, I drag the title to the bookmark toolbar. You don't have to screw around making typos as you described. Works for me every time. Never had the problem you are describing.

This doesn't sound like correct behavior at all. Either you have issues with your computer by the aforementioned malware or what ever, or the version of Firefox you're using has an issue.

About the I Don't Care About Cookies extension. I use that myself with zero issues. Although, I use it in a browser called Pale Moon. I also found an issue with that extension some years ago through some major research and I reported my findings to the Dev who corrected it. The extension is well worth a donation since the Dev allows you to right click on a web page that still has a cookie warning and report it to him where he can then add code in the next update to address that.

If you don't care for the new Firefox, may I suggest an alternative like Pale Moon. There are others as well. Also, if you don't run an anti-virus like I do, run your browser in the now free Sandboxie program. You'll have to read about it and understand how to use it. Also get in the habit to scan each and every download at Virus Total. Since Virus Total uses so many anti-virus engines you're likely to see a false positive here and there. If all the other engines check out then the download is more than likely alright. Then again, I can tell you from a hacker perspective that depending on what it is you downloaded and if a few engines detect it, it could be malicious. Again, it depends on what you downloaded and from where.

Just clicking the star in the address bar, pressing control + D or right clicking the page and adding the bookmark is all one needs to do. Some website code is so messed up you have to hit control + D to add the bookmark.

sorry, but i think you misunderstood what i said
the problem is not the addon that gets rid of cookie messages, it works as it should
but sometimes you have to click on the accept cookies message, so the browser can load the website for the bookmark icon to show up, i hope this clarifies it
im not sure if this was the problem causing it, so its just a guess
also, i have taken backup of my bookmarks

Don't block all cookies, block 3rd party cookies
I use Cookie AutoDelete FF Add-on.
Never have an issue.

I use Cookie AutoDelete FF Add-on.
Never have an issue.

The OP is not referring to cookies being placed in the browser, but the annoying cookie warning all over hell thanks to some "smart" bureaucrats in part of something called GDPR. It's just a money grab IMO and ill conceived. Great purpose, badly implemented.

This is probably by design from the website code. If you do come across a website where you see a cookie warning and you in fact have the I Don't Care About Cookies extension installed and activated, then you can right click somewhere on the web page and chose the option to report a cookie warning that wasn't blocked. The Dev of the extension will eventually look at it and add code to block that warning in the future.

thanks, thats good to know
anyway, i got most if not all my bookmarks back again
but im not sure if the cookie warning message was the only reason why this problem was caused, or if there was some other problems causing it as well

When you say the bookmarks were missing, are you referring to just the favicon of the bookmark, or the whole bookmark its self?

A favicon is a little image next to a URL in the address bar or along side the bookmark. On this website it looks like this:
faviconsf.ico

There are in fact backups of the bookmarks. If you navigate to the following directory you'll see them.

C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\PROFILENAME\bookmarkbackups

Replace the words USERNAME with your computer's username and PROFILENAME will be the profile name of the Firefox install. If you just navigate to the C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles directory it should be a no brainier at what your Firefox profile name is. There may be more than one. If you only have one FF profile then the folder containing the most crap is your profile. If you use more than one profile in FF, then you'll have to do some research based on extensions or what have you that are inside the profile folder. There may be an easier way to figure out what profile folder is which for each profile if you use more than one profile in FF, but I'd have to do some research on that.

Another way to get to your Firefox profile folder and the browser backups is to use the Everything.exe program and simply search for a file that exists in the FF profile. One such file will be key4.db. This file holds your passwords in encrypted form if you allow the browser to store your passwords. Even if you don't, that file should exist by default. And yes, it will carry some data weight to it whether you store passwords or not simply because it's a databases file and it has tables and what not. That's where the data weight comes in at. So in case you or someone else is wondering why it's some 200 KB and you save no passwords, that's why.

So fire up Everything.exe and search for the key4.db file. Now right click the file in Everything.exe and browse to its path. Presto, you're now in the FF profile area.

Keep in mind that if you have another Firefox browser derivative or Thunderbird installed there will in fact be more than one key4.db file. In which case the main folder you're looking for as it pertains to Firefox will be a folder named Mozilla.

If you want to use a bookmarks backup, simply copy and paste it to your desktop. Now in FF go to the top, Bookmarks | Show All Bookmarks | Import and Backup | Restore. Browse to the bookmarks backup file on the desktop.

By default, all of your backups should be listed there anyway. But in case you want to restore another bookmarks file, there ya go.
