MKV files to a flash drive?

I can get a 5 gig mkv file to save to a 16 gig flash drive. It says there is not enough room. I have formatted the flash and it has 16 gig available.

What is going on? how can I get the movie to save to the flash drive?

FAT32 formatted media have a file size limit of 4GB irrespective of the free space.
NTFS does not have this limit but some media devices may require FAT32.

I thought I gave you an answer? What don't you understand?

By media devices I mean things like Blu Ray players which will read FAT32 USB devices. Some of these won't read NTFS.
Maybe if you also give some information on what you want to achieve it would help.

I was in the process of posting when you added your post hence I did not see it.

I want to put a 5 gig + movie on a flash drive and play it on a blueray player or through a xbox360. I hope that is descriptive enough.

I thought that's what you may have wanted to do. If the Blu ray player will only read FAT32 then you cannot do it unless the file is 4GB or less. Even then if the movie had Cinavia piracy protection then it's likely the movie won't play either. I think the Xbox has similar constraints. Of course if you don't own the original blu ray it's illegal in most places.

If you have a video that is encoded to a hard drive or flash drive, why are you asking about playing it on a Blu Ray player? You should be able to simply select the file and have it open it a software player, such as VLC, MPCHC, or ?

I think many blu ray players now have usb ports and advertise you can play mkv movies. But then you have the constraints mentioned above. Also, just because the blu ray player recognises an mkv container it may not support the codecs within the container.

I agree that you need to looking at streaming from a PC based media center or one of the dedicating ones like WD TV Live.
