Hi Guys

First post on here, just installed windows 7 last night.
I have a bit of a dilema. I have just recieved a Samsung 225bw 22inch monitor @ 1680 x 1050. My question is with the machine specs i have now will i be able to run most games on top settings with a smooth frame rate at this resolution both now and in the foreseeable future or am i best reverting back to my 1280 x 1024 monitor.

I know its a bit of a nooby question but im just after some advice.

Thanks :)

It may not be able to max everything on every game, but you'll certainly be able to find a happy medium.

So would it help if my monitor was say 1280 x 1024 or 1440 x 900 instead of 1680 x 1050?

No. Higher res monitor always better in all cases.

but the performance would be better on a lower resolution monitor?

Graphic card performance does not depend on which monitor you're using. It depends on how you have the driver (or game itself) set.

No performance affected, correct. Higher res monitor only allows you to use higher res when you want it. (Which would be always for regular 2d desktop.)

Higher res = less performance in game BUT you will at least have the option to go as high. You can lower game resolutions if the card is unable to keep up.

Yes and No.

If you were to try and run everything maxed on a 24"+ it can have a big impact, depending on the game.

However at resolutions like 1024x768, 1280 x 1024 and 1440 x 900 you are essentially under-utilizing the video card and the CPU needs to work harder than it should. This is important when running heavily CPU dependant games.

With your specs, 1680x1050 is the 'sweet spot'
