Monitor drivers needed for m1634u Gateway after installing Windows 7

My Gateway m1634u purchased several years ago came with Windows XP. After installing Windows 7, everything works wonderful, except my monitor, which is now using a generic PnP monitor driver and is utterly stuck at 1280x800, and any program that doesn't match that resolution gets wrapped in a black frame, but not resized.

I searched everywhere I could think to look, and have the latest ATI drivers for the card... but it still isn't fixing the monitor. Plus, it won't let me switch to any other scale or resolution. Can anyone help me get the drivers I need for this laptop monitor? Thanks!

That machine is a Notebook and may not have an optional video card [most don't], uses what is built onto/into the motherboard. You should be able to get the necessary drivers from Gateway if they have them for Win7 but maybe Windows Update will have them. I changed my 4-year old M6888u from Vista to Win7 and had no problems. Mine has another number on the label on the bottom, W650I. Checking this Gateway page for mine finds "Service not available", doesn't show your model either.

Unfortunately, Gateway was unable to help; the laptop shipped with Vista, so that's the only drivers they have for it. They recommended going to the manufacturer, who they show as ATI; I updated Catalyst and the drivers, but it still has Generic PnP for my monitor driver.

And I was incorrect; it shows 1280x800 AND 800x600, but going into 800x600 just puts a large black frame on my screen, and doesn't resize anything.

So, no luck with Gateway, or ATI; and no luck on finding any 3rd party drivers so far. But thanks for trying to help.

Really, it's not a HUGE problem, except every application or game I have has to be able to resize at least close to my native resolution. I have one, Powder Toy, that cannot go fullscreen because of this (it just gives the black frames), and my Civ III cuts about an inch off each size, instead of expanding to fill the monitor. Guess I'll just have to deal until I can afford a new machine.

&& then unpack the files and try to install directly from the Device Manager
Code:
  devmgmt.msc
(oh -and- compatibility mode, for the drivers MAYBE could work; if very lucky :))

^^ Actually, you could just get an external monitor?..

.. you tried the VGA driver, for M-16 Notebooks? Perhaps the same way - unpack everything & try from the Device Manager (and you might get lucky :))

*Update Driver and manually browse and it might find it and install..

I'll give that a shot later. New project underway: reconditioning an Acer Aspire 5315-2326 as a Linux box... (ducks tomatoes)
