I recently purchased a 20 meter cable for my Dell e1910h monitor. This is a VGA cable. When connected to the 20m cable Windows 7 recognizes it as a generic monitor. This would be fine but the monitor needs to display 1366x768 for the picture to not be distorted. 1366x768 is not an option. 1360x768 is an option but the monitor goes black when I select that. When I connect it to the 1 meter cable I had been using it is detected properly and I can change the display to 1366x768. I have all drivers installed. What I can't figure out is why it isn't detected properly on a longer cable. Thanks in advance.

You are past the limit for vga cable to do high res

VGA is an analog signal and so as distance increases the quality will decrease. A lot of factors can determine the maximum cable length, but for low resolutions (up to 800x600) you can reach 100 feet and beyond without too much trouble. For mid-range resolutions of 1280x1024/1024x768 you can typically reach somewhere between 50 to 100 feet. For higher resolutions (1600x1200, 1920x1200) we recommend that you go a maximum of around 25 feet. Once again, every setup is unique and it's hard to say a maximum length for every situation

After a lot more research I fixed my problem. It had nothing to do with cable length. I needed to set my maximum display resolution in my graphics card settings.
