Monitor will not sleep while computer is locked; sleeps if unlocked

Hello everyone,

I've recently ran into this problem on my computer. My monitor will not sleep while the computer is locked. If I just let it sit, the screen saver will appear, then the monitor will sleep. However, once the computer is locked, the monitor will not sleep.

The monitor auto sleeping was working perfectly fine last week.

I have triple checked the Power Options, ensuring the monitor sleeps in 10 minutes (screen saver activates at 5 minutes). I've also looked at the Advanced Power Options setting, and that is set at 10 minutes as well. I have reset to defaults and the problem still persists. I have also tried to set a GPO to see if that would work, nothing either.

Am I missing anything? I don't understand how the monitor will sleep when the computer isn't locked.

I know I could just sleep my computer (I don't want to) or turn my monitor off (this gets annoying after a while). I appreciated any assistance into this matter.

Edit: What I've done/tried:
Triple checked monitor settings/power options
Reset to defaults, then set the monitor to sleep at 10 minutes
Changed to a new theme
Enabled monitor sleep GPO
Restarted multiple times
Disabled screen saver
My monitor has no sleep settings (settings, not function; it has the sleep function)

Try turning off the screen saver. No real need for screen savers anymore with the option to turn the monitor off.

Alright, I tested that out and it did not work.

Then apparently it's working like it should? What do you mean when you say the "computer is locked"? Does that mean a BSOD, turned off or what? The screen saver and power options will only work if Windows is active. And if your monitor doesn't have a power saver option (sleep), it will just sit there waiting for a signal from the PC.

He means when you press the Windows Key + the L (l) key the computer goes into Lock Mode, IE the computer is locked.

I do that with my Work notebook computer all the time and with my home desktop if I am going out of the house for a time and don't want to shut down or put it to sleep.

With either system once in the Locked mode the monitor turns off at the time specified in the Power Options settings.

Sometimes monitors will have their own settings. I was just saying that my model doesn't have any settings, but it does have the "power save" a.k.a. sleep function.

I did not reboot my computer, that really shouldn't have much of an effect on it after disabling my screen saver.

Alright, I have restarted. Screen saver is disabled, monitor sleep time set to 2 minutes. It did not sleep.

I don't know what's going on here. I really don't want to reinstall Windows because of this.

What have you changed on your system since last week. Something is running in the background that is causing the system to think it needs the monitor on.

Only program that has been installed is a game (Borderlands 2). A few Windows updates, but that's it.

Well then I'd look into what that game starts at Win startup. Could be it is loading some type of Update system that is always running.

If that's the case, then how can my monitor sleep when the computer isn't locked? It isn't consistent.

The monitor isn't turning off, Locked or unlocked, for the same reason. It is the same process or running program that is stoping it from turning off. You have to find what that program/process is. More then likely it has something to do with that game you installed.

Sorry I don't know how to make it any clearer and I don't know what the program/process may be.

Ok i had the same prob on one of my PC's after a update i had ages ago it was down to (wmpnetwk.exe "Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service")
how i fixed it was Control Panel >> All Control Panel Items >> Power Options >> Edit Plan Settings >> Change advanced power settings > Multimedia settings > When sharing media set to [ Allow the computer to sleep ] Or [ Allow the computer to enter Away Mode ]

XP had a prob with screensaver and main user account if the screensaver was off on the main user account but all other account's was on Monitor sleep was disabled at lock screen but was fine when unlocked and enabling a screensaver on the main user account at lock screen Monitor sleep was enabled and out of my 3 pc's at that time it only happend to two of them << weird bug  so you may want to check that out as well for win 7

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, it did not work. I allowed the computer to sleep, tested the monitor to see if it would sleep. Nothing. I also forced disabled WMP network sharing via services.msc, restarted, and tested again. Didn't work.

I appreciate the post.
