Monitors and Mouse/Keyboard randomly shut off - DVI & USB port issue?

Hi,

My name is Gabe and I am first off NOT a computer expert. I know enough terminology to get me in trouble but I don't pretend to be a expert.

Here is the setup with the issue:

HP Pavilion Elite m9360f PC running Windows 7 Ultimate x64

2 monitors (both running from DVI ports)

USB Mouse and Keyboard


The Issue:

While I am using the computer the mouse and keyboard will randomly SHUT OFF. No power, no nothing, its like the USB port suddenly turns itself off. The screen is still up but the mouse is frozen.

I am then forced to hard reset. When I turn the computer back on it fires up just fine blinking away but the screens don't engage (aka the light on the screen (Samsung Sync Master 206BW) just blinks in standbye mode, aka never receiving a signal from the computer).

The mouse and keyboard also never light up.

I am then forced to hard restart and the same issue keeps happening.

Usually after about 5-8 times the screens light up and the mouse and keyboard turn on. I can then start my computer normally

I then will get a random amount of time before it starts all over again.


This is incredibly frustrating so any help anyone can provide will be MUCH appreciated.

UPDATE: As I was about to write this post I was on a video chat with a friend in England via Skype on the desktop. In the middle of the chat the same thing happened but this time I had audio going and my sound froze as well.

2nd UPDATE: Attempted to start with just one screen. Took longer then usual (it appears to take more hard resets each time) and then when it did start it started normally). After I had logged in and got to the main desktop screen I plugged in the second monitor and it immediately froze. Maybe my video card is the issue? If so then why would my mouse and keyboard go out at the same time?

Sometimes running DVI without scaling can cause lockups to the whole system I can't remember if it's called scaling or not but there are setting that can be set to prevent this from happening, I just can't remember what they were via the video software

UPDATE: Now I cannot even get my computer to turn on. Screens will not fire, computer and mouse cannot get power, nothing. I cannot even get it to the point where I can reinstall windows aka read my disc. This is sounding more and more like either a hardware failure or a virus maybe? I am incredibly lost.

Well Acelead it sounds pretty serious and I would try and download this: Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper Beta | Microsoft Connect for your system that you are having trouble with it comes either 32 bit or 64 bit and can start a dead system and scan for malware on that system. I hoping that you may be able to use it, but from the sound of it you may even have a bios problem, it's very hard to say.

UPDATE: Got it started and got a BSOD with the following error code: STOP: 0x0000007F (0x0000000000000008,0x0000000080050031,0x00000000000006f8, 0xfffff8000c07981E

Any ideas?

This could be due to the following:

This error message can occur if either of the following conditions exists:

• Your computer has hardware or software problems (hardware failure is the most common cause).
• You try to over clock the speed of your computer's processor (for example, you set a 150 MhZ processor to run at 187 MhZ).

The above STOP error means a trap occurred in kernel mode and the trap is either one the kernel is not allowed to have or is always fatal. The most common causes of a STOP 0x7F are:

• Low-level hardware corruption, such as corrupt memory (RAM)
• Mismatched memory modules
• A malfunctioning motherboard

How old is the computer? Do you have mix matched memory? We could start there by running a memtest to test the memory via this guide: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html and we can go from there.

Unplug you second monitor and see if it will start. If it does run it that way awhile and see if things work correctly.
