Will your PC work faster - No.

However, depending on what type of apps you run, the extra RAM can make certain processes complete faster.

Multimedia editing, virtual machine(s), some games - these can benefit directly.

Hi there

Quick answer is in general NO but depends on what you are running.

Virtual Machines, Data Base servers or any web / other server with lots of users all benefit from a load of RAM.

Typical single user apps on a home PC won't buy you anything in terms of speed.

Even games -- these benefit from a better Video processor and faster disks.

Unless you actually NEED the RAM save your money for the moment. By the time you REALLY need it you'll probably have got a new computer anyway.

Hi there

None at the current time except the one's outlined in my previous post - Large data base servers, virtual machines etc etc.

You'll be able to run MORE apps concurrently but speedwise a typical app won't run faster.

Your colleague should update to a 64 Bit OS as he is wasting half of his RAM.

cheers

Any program that manipulates a lot of data - e.g. video editing, CAD (computer aided design), etc. With the bread and butter applications like mail, text, internet browsing, etc., you will see no difference.

If your friend does not want this RAM then it's certainly not going to do any harm (as long as it's compatible with your other components)
If your running x64 and he's sticking to x86 then at least your system could use it and you might see improvement in some games and you might, in the future, start using applications which can needs lots of RAM.
In other words if it's free or very cheap get it.
Cheers, John:)
