Solved more ping drops on interface 1 than interface 2

Hello forum Gurus,

I Have a machine running Windows 7 x64 with two network interfaces. This machine is being used as a DVR and is connected to 4 ip cameras. The DVR software is Milestone Go.

When using interface one 3 out of the 4 cameras work without any problems but camera 4 constantly drops offline with lots of ping timeouts on average about %60 loss.

When using interface two there %0 ping loss on all 4 cameras but only Camera 4 has video the other 3 cameras have no video. That may be a DVR software issue but not positive.

It sounds like bandwidth congestion, but too many unknowns here to troubleshoot. I would seek support from the software vendor as it's more likely they have dealt with this type of issue before.

Thank you very much for the reply. I am trying to use support from the software vendor as a last resort as it will cost money.

Is it possible that the Vendor software would interfere with the ping test on that specific interface/device?

Well, I have no knowledge of the software, but we can give it a shot.

How exactly is everything connected? For example, are the cameras part of a network or are they connected directly to the computer? The more info you can provide, the better.

Cable Modem -> Mikrotik Router -> WiFi/Switch -> Ubiquiti toughswitch non PoE Port

Note1: The Mikrotik router is the main router "DHCP Client" "DHCP Server"
Note2: DHCP IP Pool 192.168.40.100-192.168.40.254

Ubiquiti toughswitch Port5 -> Windows7 Machine interface1
Ubiquiti toughswitch non PoE Port -> Internet
IP Camera1 -> ubiquiti toughswitch Port1
IP Camera2 -> ubiquiti toughswitch Port2
IP Camera3 -> ubiquiti toughswitch Port3
IP Camera4 -> ubiquiti toughswitch Port4

IP Topology:
Mikrotik Router 192.168.40.1
ubiquiti toughswitch has an IP of 192.168.40.3
Windows7 Machine Interface1 has an IP of 192.168.40.80
IP Camera1 has an IP of 192.168.40.81
IP Camera1 has an IP of 192.168.40.82
IP Camera1 has an IP of 192.168.40.83
IP Camera1 has an IP of 192.168.40.84

Note3: Interface2 is being used to stream video data to the DVR client and to remotely access the Server.

I am assuming you have verified that Camera 4 works fine? For example, using just Camera 4 and Camera 2 or using Camera 4, 3 and 2, verifying everything works, then adding Camera 1 and see if there is a problem? I would certainly troubleshoot the hardware first!



Since you have two switches (Ubiquiti and the WiFi/Switch) I would subnet the cameras in two pairs. The Network Topology should look like

Cable Modem > Router > Siwtch 1> 2 cameras
(Cable Modem > Router>) Siwtch 2> 2 cameras

The netmask can remain 255.255.255.0 and you can subnet the cameras (and your PC), one subnet could have network id 192.168.40.0 and the other 192.168.41.0, for example. This would certainly alleviate the load, but not sure how it would work out with the software, if you have a guide for it, you may want to look there.

The problem was this. Interface 1 port's physical bandwidth limit was exceeded causing only camera 1 to drop offline.

It may have something to do with camera 1's ability to communicate to the DVR server through a saturated network. There may have been to many dropped packets causing the video stream to break. The other cameras may be more tolerant and for this reason the video looked fine.

After decreasing the frame-rates and video quality the problem went away. Problem solved!

Note1: Camera 1 is a different make then camera's 2-4.
