It doesn't matter what the customers want.

They can only get what is on offer. Or they can hang on to what they already have - there is a limit to how long they can do that.

The prices are being slashed in the hope those who are resisting will just get one anyway and put up with it because it is cheap.That will probably work over a period of time.

There is nothing else unless the buyers can afford a Mac.

That's another thing besides the fact that no one is trying or buying Win8 at these big box stores. I'm so boggled by this I stop by every one I see to watch. One problem is that many of them don't work, including the 2-3 touchscreens which have Win8 on them.

And if you figure out how to click around on the Metro screen and find the instruction video it has such an advanced demo it only boggles you more. You'd have to have the skills of a Benihana chef to do all that touch-tossing, pinching and other finger whirly-gigging. and they're trying to sell this mostly on non-touchscreens so who made this blunder? Now watch them back away from the mess, slowly.

It only aggravates consumers who are bucking up to move from XP, or want to see what could possibly improve on Win7. Most want a competent, easily-intuitive (Win7) desktop experience, not a phone or Ipad app.

Linux, dollar wise is "cheap". I am thinking as people convert over to Linux even more software and drivers will become available. MS can only command what we do as long as we are dependent on them. Once another OS takes off, they are in deep Cha-Cha.

It is only going to be a few enthusiasts who try the Linux route.

The public won't - not unless it is widely available on a range of oem machines.

There is a possibilty the Chinese involvement will give ubuntu a bit of a leg up - which may help with the oem situation. Surprising there hasn't been more coverage of that on the net.

Hard to tell at this stage.

Win 7

Win 7 still has life so I have not been in a hurry. I tried loading Linux Mint Mate and enjoyed it. Didn't really spend a lot of time on it. But I consider it a good alternative. The next machine I build is going to be assembled with Linux in mind. I don't like the attitude from MS.

I'm in no hurry at all. I'll wait until the smoke clears after Win 9 comes out to decide what to do. The problem is I have software I depend on that won't operate in Linux, even in Wine. By then, however, it's possible that enough people will have become fed up with M$ that either Linux or another OS will be compatable with those programs.

I'm wondering how long the Hardware suppliers can put up with the slump in sales, surely the poor sales of win8 has a knock on effect that the manufacturers can only take for so long before they too have to put pressure on MS to do something about it. I've lost count of how many manufacturers have no driver support for anything less than Win8 on new systems.
I was speaking to a large UK supplier today and she told me she sells on average 1 win 8 retail package to 20 win 7 and the demand for win 7 OEM units far exceeds that of win 8 OEM's

The poor sales guy at Office Depot was despondent today about sales but bragging how he might actually have a sale to a guy who was coming back to try several PC's again. He actually saw him coming in the door and bolted over to welcome him. This was hopefully to be the first PC sale of the week.

They are starting to get angry about Win8. How long til it filters down to the stockholders?

Even better would be if the hardware suppliers would get together with the Linux guys and build a standardized Linux system that can be shipped with the PCs. I would vote for Mint Mate as the base, but any other may be fine too.

Then we, the users, would have an affordable alternative.

Well some retail outlets like Staples Office Supply stores are offering free lessens when buying any new 8 pc be it a desktop, laptop, or tablet. They realized some help was going to be needed in order to sell anything with 8 on it as well as the OEMs coming up with their own substitutions for the Start menu most will be looking for now gone for good?!

Yeah, I was at Staples the other day and wanted to check out their Windows 8 instructions. But at the instructions desk, the PC was disconnected and they had no instructor.

Maybe they were attending a course on how to best use Windows 8.

:roflmao: That's pretty bad when the part time help you hire to run a store also needs to go through a course on how to use the latest just to show a few things to a customer!

The information about getting free instructions however wasn't from anyone at a store but in the Staples promos for new 8 pcs. tv ads, etc. Typically you may see something like that on a 30second while a clerk in an actual store is lost when bringing it up with them!

The old saying of "one hand not knowing what the other is doing" seems to fit the bill there as well as what seems to be the thing the MS overlords are presently looking for by the mishmash way they made changes in 8! The user will typically to see the familiar things in some way, shape, or form while MS simply said "we will now take those away and you will play our game the way we want you to!"

Likewise when Staples was offering free lessons in their promos their sales management already knew they were going to have problems moving new hardwares out with the way MS upset the usual desktop type OS they have been carrying all these years. The retailers know what sells and what simply won't! They depend on what does!

This is the one main reason why more and more consumers are just buying online instead of dealing with lackluster salespeople.

That and much better product selection, better prices, and better availability (fewer stockouts). I live in a major megopolis and it's like living in Hicksville.
