I don't see why it's so difficult to make two versions of the same operating system?

I doubt the mass market will care about synchronization across multiple devices. I don't know anyone my age group who owns a Windows phone, so that kinda breaks this sync doesn't it?

The mass market is mostly concerned with, how fast is my Internet and how long will it get me to get on Twitter/Facebook? Or, order some new clothes online and check my e-mails.

Absolutely right. The installer could generate a tablet UI when it senses a touch enabled screen and a traditional UI when no touch is present. They do that e.g. for disks. When they sense a zero rotation disk (SSD), they do the alignment, switch defrag off, etc.

The layman argument against it is double maintenance. But that is not such a big problem. Operating systems are structured in layers and the UI is the highest layer. The double maintenance would only apply to that layer. And that would be a small price to pay to make billions of PC users happy.

Here is the example of Android (which I happen to have handy) that shows an operating system layering and the maintenance of those different layers is usually done by different teams.

From Microsoft's perspective, surely isn't it more logical to satisfy both markets? The niche market of enthusiasts and the mass market of businesses and home users.

Everyone is happy and satisfied with your product and will continue to use it.

Yeah right, if MS only wanted. But they want to push their tablet UI and all the consequences down our throat. I am NOT going to participate in this game. There are plenty of other options.

Microsoft is not going to get another penny from me until they come to their senses and deliver an Operating System that is suitable for the PC.

thanks to your leadership and tutorials. As we speak I am creating a 125GB partition on a 1.5TB drive to install Mint directly on the hard drive. I shall then set it up and tweak away.

I am glad my little tutorials help and are useful. Although I have used Linux off and on since a few years (mainly Ubuntu and Fedora), I am not a real Linux expert. But with Mint Mate, things are pretty simple. And if I don't know something, I ask at the Linux forums. These guys are also very helpful.

Therein lies the problem, Harry. Microsoft decided (for whatever the reason) that starting with Windows 8 the traditional desktop experience would no longer be a priority. Apparently MS believes that we traditional PC users who sit at a desk at home or at work and who use a traditional desktop or laptop PC (without a touch screen) are a dying breed.

Maybe MS knows something that I don't know. Maybe by the time Windows 7 reaches end-of-support all Windows users will have to have a chip implanted that will make even touch screens obsolete. All computing will be 100% mind control in the cloud or who knows where. But in the meantime, it makes no marketing sense to me either why MS would alienate so many of its traditional customers.

That all goes with the playmobile UI of Windows 8. I guess they want to attract the kindergarden kids as customers. Not very serious business behavior. I think they are doomed unless they come to their senses.

The info I needed came right up in the search bar in Mint I was impressed. With the success of Windows 7 who would have though we are heading this way. Other OS vendors will be laughing all the way to the bank if M$ continues this path. I am no Linux expert either but it is intuitive, something 8 is not on the desktop. It has usability.

Microsoft will need to learn the hard way then, it's obvious Windows 8 isn't selling, and I've only seen one OEM advert with Windows 8 being promoted (HP maybe?), so they aren't in hurry to sell Windows 8 because they know it not going to sell.

Once the support ends for Windows 7, then I'm going to switch to Linux, unless they produce another Windows desktop operating system.

Guess what? The OEM advert had a child using the hybrid tablet/laptop too!

Today's visit to Best Buy was hilarious. Someone actually wanted to hear music on a WIn8 laptop, so they found how to click the Music tile and turned on the sample music. The salesman showed them how to find Settings to turn up the volume. Then they tried to close the Music app and no one could find how to do it. They had to call another salesman, who called another salesman who knew.

It is hard for me to believe that most user of Windows 8 don't break dance on a board room table or desk.

I don't think we can bread dance with Windows 7 and that is why Windows 8 is such a priority to get.
The break dancing capability with Windows 8 certainly has me considering Windows 8.
I must also say I was impress in the commercials that show how just a hand swoop across the screen will enlarge a picture of Mommy instead of the arcade method of one tick away to maximize.
I think their should be a book on how to use movements in a Karate Kata to use a toymobile. That should improve the sales of toymobiles with Windows 8 until students got to at least the skill level of a brown belt.

I put this in the other 8 thread in response to a post about changing 8 to look like 7:

I guess my two cents would be, why should I to buy a new OS, only to make a bunch of changes and disable specific features new to 8, just to get back to the OS that I know and love? I understand that new features and design may make the overall speed and the like faster and more efficient, but 7 has made me happy and unless 8 can read my mind before I perform an action I don't think a thing like a slight speed increase is enough for me to change over. I know there is more to be said for 8, but I'm comfortable with 7 and can't see any huge value to entice me to switch over, especially if all I'm going to do is spend time switching it back over.

Now if I was a fan of touch screens and such than yes the demo would have been enough to sway me, but I have a separate tablet for touch screen simple browsing, I do not want to reach to the screen to swipe. One of the other reasons I won't make that jump (desktop that is) is as a professional trainer, I deal with a lot of people who suffer from upper crossed syndrome, or a very anterior shift in their body alignment, due to largely their jobs of sitting, and typing with their arms always protruding forward. It leads to over/under use of particular muscle groups, which then has negative effects on the surrounding area and can cause specific problems with range of motion and shoulder stability. I can't imagine the people I will be seeing in 5-6 years if reaching your arm in front of you becomes the norm, rotator and shoulder girdle stability are going to be hurting. Of course that's just the trainer in me

You can always Dual Boot Installation - Windows 8 and Windows 7 or Vista - Windows 8 Forums which on a Win8 machine requires turning off Secure Boot to shrink C and install Win7 in UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) - Install Windows 7 with - Windows 7 Forums.

If your BIOS doesn;t support Win8 without Secure Boot you can reinstall both OS's, even choosing in that case to Bypass UEFI to Install WIn7 and Win8.

But what I discover on my machines is that as soon as I Dual Boot 8 and make it a tolerable desktop experience, it is essentially a slightly buggy Win7. So I always end up going back to 7 and never look back, eventually deleting the 8 partition when I need its space. I've done this a dozen times since 8 Preview was released.

I find it a lot easier to run Windows 8 in VMware Player - no problems with UEFI or any of that modern stuff. That way it can be up all day when I run the Windows 7 host and I can look at it with 1 click.

I usually also have my Linux Mint VMware partition up. I use it a lot for browsing the web - is a lot safer than Windows.

Both VMware systems sit on an external USB3 attached SSD. Performance is super. I got this 60GB SSD for $59.95 and it was lying around. That is a good use for it.

Hmm, not really. I am hardly using Windows 8 and I have not tweaked it one bit. But there are a few threads on the eightforums where recommendations were made. Since I do not intend to use Windows 8 for anything other than academic studies, I never followed up on those, sorry.
