And like you, I also resent M$'s "Our way or the highway" attitude about W8.

Meantime I'll stay with W7 till M$ comes to their senses.

It has no effect whatsoever on the performance of this i7 2670QM Sandy Bridge laptop with 8G Ram & a 2G Ge-Force.

So I strongly resent not being able to have it should I so wish.

Other than that, I'm just fine with W8.

Yes, mine has Classic Shell, and boots direct to the desktop.

Metro is there if I want it (which isn't often) but doesn't intrude the rest of the time.

Aero has such low overhead it can actually use more resources to turn it off.

I've always wondered why when presented with the sheer beauty of Win7, one would want to get rid of it to have the government-file-cabinet hideousness of Win2000 Classic Theme, or Win8's own droll ugliness.

Aero glass and stuff runs on the GPU in moments when it does not have anything better to do. When playing most games all effects are temporarily disabled. But even if not I doubt anyone would notice the performance impact anyway.

I mean, that stuff was right in the Vista times when they acted like morons and pushed the OEM to place Vista on low-end hardware from 2005-2007 that was barely capable of supporting it, but with stuff made after 2010? Not quite. Even an Atom n455 can run Aero at full effects without any performance impact while doing the heaviest thing it can do (watch a youtube video at 720p, damn crappy flash player, the same video is less than 50% if played by VLC).

Yeah, followed the thread from day one. Plenty of neat articles about windows 8 getting posted every now and then.

It is a tablet OS ported to the desktop environment, and will never work well as such. Apple would be proud.

Apple is laughing. They know how stupid that move is. Their laptops and mini-PCs still run the same-ish apple interface, they didn't move their tablet/phone interface to their PCs as well.

M$ made an oops and will not admit it.....

Maybe win8 might be like DOS 6, as it wasn't till DOS 6.22 that they got it working... (well mostly)
And that was from DOS 5, which was quite good,,,,, as far as M$ dos goes..

When reading this all, I've come to the conclusion that;


1. This thread has turned into a "Let's beat the F*** out of Windows 8."
2. That 90% of the people posting here, are b*tching about small features.
3. That no one has REALLY given Windows 8 a good review based upon a small window of time.


With that said, 90% of what all of you have said, is invalid and should be deleted as useless bullsh*t. But, thats my opinion on this, now for my opinion on Windows 8.


As someone who uses multiple devices, being able to have a COMMON interface is incredibly nice. Windows 8 is something new, and a step towards a bigger, better UI. I've been using Windows 8 since it was in Alpha, yes at the time I worked for Microsoft as a Data Center Grunt, and chose to run Windows 8, instead of Windows 7. I absolutely love Microsoft's idea of interconnecting devices, its something I've actually wanted for many, many years. Everyone I have spoken to about Windows 8, has said it was sh*t, and that it was too different from every previous freaking version.

But wait! Isn't that the DAMN point? It's new, and different. Microsoft has realized, was with Ubuntu (Reference towards Ubuntu Edge), that one day, Desktops will be obsolete. Our tablets & smartphones will be able to be so powerful, desktops will be useless.


As of now, Windows 8.1 is bringing the start button back, thanks to all the whiney snively little kids. I'm going to be forced to look at the same fugly button I've looked at since Windows 98SE.

I've said it once, I've said it twice, I'll say it again; If You do NOT like change, don't update, don't even look at or think of trying Windows 8.

I'm fairly pissed right now, when writing this, I ran out of coffee and some ass knocked my cup over, so instead of punching him in the face, I'm writing an angry message.

To wrap it up; I love my Windows 8. If you don't love it, shut up and go use Windows 7. I'm tired of seeing comments about how sh*t Windows 8 is, and how BAD of an OS it is. It isn't bad, its actually BASED off of Windows 7. Windows 8 is essentially the Windows 7 core, but with a Touch Screen UI. The only reason why Windows 8.1 has a start button is because Microsoft goofed, and forgot not everyone uses touchscreens on their desktops.

I'm 110% impressed with the innovativeness of Microsoft. They've surpassed Linux & Mac in regards to Tablets, Smartphones, and Desktop OS's. Everyone forgets that Microsoft is just a company, ran by humans. Humans make mistakes, and we learn from them. Mac is just as bad as Microsoft when it comes to bugs, and the rest of it. But the massive difference between them, is Mac doesn't have a MASSIVE user base. I'm a Government Employee, wanna know what OS I use? Windows 7 / Windows XP Pro. Wanna know what our Servers run? Windows Server 2012. Wanna know what we tried? Macs. Wanna know what we got rid of? Macs. Why? Because Macs were a lot harder to use for an average computer user, and 95% of our applications we use, wouldn't work.

So with all of this said, stop ragging on Microsoft for being innovative. They had the balls to try something new, 6 months to a year, Mac/Linux will be doing something similar because they learned what to do, and what not to do. Just makes sense to me.

I'll go out on a limb and say 'no they won't'. I'm a PC gamer and I'll never be gaming on a handheld device. Never. And there's a large community of PC gamers out there.

This is your opinion, and is not shared by most here. All articles posted also hint at the fact that most people in the world don't share your view too.

What seems to be the reality from all reports, is that windows 8 isn't selling.
And it's not only because tablets are stealing the home computing userbase, which certainly isn't helping. 99% of the businness customers have no plan to adopt W8 even if they won't buy tablets anyway.

So they either find a way to fix it or they eventually lose market share. This is a sad fact, it isn't "whining".

I'd like to point out that not even Ubuntu Edge was supposed to run the same UI in both modes. The core/kernel was the same, but when in phone mode it was supposed to use Ubuntu Mobile or whatever they call their mobile-device-with-touchscreen UI, when connected to a screen it was supposed to switch to Desktop mode and use Unity, the PC user interface.

And while Unity is able to run fine on a tablet and on a PC (with some minor snags), it got so much flak that someone forked Ubuntu and made Linux Mint with a more traditional desktop UI. A lot of the Ubuntu userbase switched sides too and Mint goes hand-in-hand with its parent Ubuntu as far as popularity goes.

Also, desktops as in "screen with a keyboard and an accurate pointing device" are NOT going to disappear. Try doing serious work on a tablet and you'll see why. Desktops are far far more ergonomic.
What might happen is that Windows dies and Android Mini PC take its place. It's not like there aren't enough around already that can PWN anything using the x86 architecture in both price, performance, size, power consumption. For simple home use or company use.

And why should I care that the kernel is basically the same? I'm not interacting with the PC at a hardware level. All I see is the User Interface. So do most users.

It does not add interesting stuff, it is stripped down, it has an UI made for touchscreens when a PC does not have one for obvious reasons.

Trying to sell it on desktops was plain stupid, and it's showing.

And it's sad, because I actually love Windows Phone (the UI that "inspired" W8's) and I'm even saddened that with all this they did hurt its ecosystem too, killing off a good product (and probably Nokia, a brand I had some sympathy for).

Ummm, no. Apple has no intention of making the same UI on both mobile and PC/laptops. I have no reports from Ubuntu (apart from some tablets someone ported it on) or other major linux distros intending to do the same.

So far the only UI that fares "well" for mobile devices and desktops at the same time is Android. No, seriously. With very minor tweaks it's ready for desktops, and is awesome on media center-like devices.
Which is ironic. Was not designed for desktop use. Nor caught on before Apple "invented" the smartphones.

Seriously? I doubt I'll live long enough to see a tablet, let alone a smartphone, with a six core CPU, 32GB of RAM, and several TB of storage. Try doing serious productivity, such as serious Word Processing (such as writing, formatting, and publishing the next Great American Novel), large multipage spreadsheets, serious graphics and photo editing (not the cute tricks you see in the i-Pad and Surface commercials), engraving sheet music (a huge industry even though very few people ever see it done), creating video graphics (such as movie SFX and animation), creating serious synthesized music, programming, and countless other tasks that don't come to mind right now from a tablet or a phone. Heck, try doing tasks that require multiple large screens from a tablet or phone. I bet day traders would just love having to work from a tablet or a phone. Just because you don't need the power of a desktop doesn't mean others won't. Tablets and smartphones have their uses but they will never completely replace desktops in our lifetimes.

Just because YOU hate the Start button doesn't mean other people don't want or need it. Build a bridge and get over it (or replace it with one that looks better to you...oh, wait...that's a Win 7 feature). Even the new 8.1 Start Menu is still too clunky and awkward for my tastes. I can find infrequently used programs far faster from a list in the Win 7 Start Menu than from a bunch of clunky tiles in Win 8.1's menu.

Kind of like having the same driving controls in both a sports car and an 18 wheeler? If it could be done with the UIs of desktops and tablets/smartphones, that would be great but each have different needs and inputs so trying to have a one size fits all OS has failed, no matter what you may think. The sales numbers tell the tale.

I could go on but I have better things to do.

Dreadstar, I think you need to reconsider your attitude. Our opinion of Windows 8 is just as valid as yours. You're talking to some of the most technologically astute people around, and to say their opinions are useless BS, is quite a stretch of the imagination, to put it mildly. Desktops are what the great majority of the productivity of the world is done on. They may become obsolete one day, but it will not be in my lifetime. M$ just cut out that part of their base by porting a tablet OS to call it a desktop OS. It is not and 8.1 does not change that fact. What M$ did was not some small 'goof', it was a very intentional and premeditated plan, that has blown up in their face. The economic events that have followed the release is quite telling, whether you choose to admit it or not. If you and many others like Windows 8, I'm quite happy for you. But, for a majority of the rest of the world, it hasn't worked out well for M$. But, your attitude of anyone who disagrees with your opinion is useless BS and invalid, just does not wash. If we were all cry babies and whiners, and afraid of change, this would be the Windows XP forum, not Seven Forums.

Dreadstar I think you have missed most of the points in this thread.
If one likes Windows 8 on their PC that is fine with me.
Most people in my opinion don't want Windows 8 on their PC's is not because it's new and different. It's because Windows 8 does not meet the needs and desires. Many of the same people use and maybe like this type of operating system on their poke tablets and poke phones.
Please keep this in mind. Over a billion PC's in the world are running Windows and have been for years because the operating system meets their needs and desires. That is somewhere over 90% of the established PC users. Microsoft has had this large share of this market for decades.
Now Microsoft is telling this 90% established market to kiss their ying yang. Microsoft wants us to buy Windows 8 for our PC's and shut up.
The billion plus of PC users are telling Microsoft NO. We won't shut up and we won't buy Windows 8 until Microsoft makes it a system that is PC friendly and productive.
I for one understand that Microsoft want to get into the tablet and phone market in a big way. I wish them well.
What I don't understand is Microsoft's attitude that they have to throw away the huge market share they have in PC's to join other markets like phones and tablets. They can be a big part in all markets at the same time if they wouldn't try forcing a tablet operating system down the PC user throats.
I'm very sure Microsoft has the talent in their company to make more that one operating system or different versions to meet the needs of various platforms. All Microsoft management would have to do is point the talented people they have in that direction and give them permission to go for it.
Example:
Did automotive manufactures stop making cars because they wanted to make trucks. Did they stop making cars and trucks because a new market place wanted mini vans. No they did not. They added new products to meet the needs of the new markets while keeping their older product lines going strong.
What came of all this? Now they have several products to take care of the different markets and all is well.

I have tried Windows 8 I assure you, and I even believe Windows 8.1 is a slight improvement. Apple got it right with having a different UI for their desktops/laptops and phones, they knew you can't have a a phone touch UI on a desktop computer, it simply doesn't work.

Desktops will not become obsolete, look at TVs and cars they haven't declined at all, they've just been improved like desktops and laptops with the new hardware added.

Microsoft; wait I'm not even going to blame the company, I'm going to blame Steve Ballmer for creating a mess of a operating system. A UI which isn't flexible and easy to learn, there needs to be an easy transition if your going to completely change a model which has been successful for the last 20/30 years. The boot times are only faster due hybrid sleep, and the kernel means absolutely nothing to the average user. Many features have been stripped out from the operating system, and programs don't truly close, they can only be closed in the Task Manager.

Please tell me, how can I write programs and debug systems on a tablet?
