Mouse hourglass always on because of MS Office Clicktorun service

Hello,
I have MS office 2013 Home and I recently installed SSD on my PC replacing the original hard drive. Since then, whenever I log in, the mouse pointer is always showing hourglass, indicating that it is working in the background.

• To debug the cause, I went into MSCONFIG and disabled all non-microsoft services and restarted the system but the mouse was still showing the hourglass
• Then I re-enabled all those services and disabled just the MS Office Clicktorun service and restarted. Upon restarting, the mouse icon changed to the normal icon
• However, as you might expect, disabling that service doesn't allow me to use any MS office products
• And this morning, as a last resort, I uninstalled MS Office and when I restarted, the mouse pointer was normal. Then, I reinstalled it and the hourglass returned
• The hourglass is constantly there, never going away unless I disable that Microsoft Office Clicktorun service and restart, like I said above

Can anyone help me fix this issue?

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

When installing MS Office 2013 Click to Run, most of the installation is downloaded & installed from MS & not from the installation DVD. So you need to make sure your internet connection is working properly. Sometimes it can take a while to download & install so give it plenty of time.

Also disable your Avast anti virus program during the installation as it can cause interference.

You have mentioned the hour glass showing which possibly indicates Office is still trying to download & install so give it plenty of time.

One word of clarification, the download and install operation is a one time only drain on your resources, the programs do actually install and run from your local drive once installed, the download is triggered on an application by application basis, being installed only when first run. The advantage of this method is that if you never use a particular application, you do not have to have it installed

Thanks for the reply.

MS Office is already completely installed and all updates have finished downloading. I checked Windows update to make sure too, just in case.

I have a good internet connection (>50Mbps) through Ethernet. And when I check in Task Manager, officeclicktorun.exe is taking 1-2% of CPU resources and I have no Office products running right now.

• My issue is how can I disable that clicktorun service in MSCONFIG and still run MS Office products?
• Or maybe someone can think of a different solution that I can't see right now.

I have just checked my MSCONFIG & under the Services tab & the MS Office click to run is ticked & it says it is running. This does not cause any problems on mine.
Having that ticked does not mean that your Office programs are not running directly from your computer, because in actual fact they are.
I think that having that ticked probably allows Office to automatically install updates, which it does in the background & they don't show up in your normal Windows Update folder.

You could try an Office Repair, to do that open Control Panel, select Programs & Features, scroll down to Microsoft Office & Right Click on it & select Change, this will show a couple of repair options to try.

The office repair on a click-to-run install, could actually cause more access to the net as the office system would look to the on-line repositories to fix any possible issues. I was one of the beta - testers for this delivery system and found that it could take several days working in background to complete a 100% office install. I did have a slow net connection and had a high usage pattern of the older test system i was using, in the end I just started the process and left it running overnight

Yeah, I tried the repair and can confirm that the icon is still 'working in the background'.

When, at the start of the beta program, there were discussions of planned use of Click to run delivery systems one possible scenario, was the one that made most sense to me

This is the case of a large company using a range of different product mix across various user groups or departments in a case of a company with 500 employees, they couls set up all 500 systems in an identical manner, and as the licensing was also linked to the download/run action, as users started to use the applications only those applications needed on any particular system would be downloaded and incur licensing costs. this made a lot of sense. Also if a system was transferred to another department the changes in available applications would be controlled by there use, and not need major IT department resource

In my situation where I am likely to need multiple copies of the full package, on "slow or no" internet systems the older single ISO download is still an option

Or does that depend on the type of product that was originally purchased by my company?

Yes the option is one at company level - the older one complete office suite per employee, or the Click-to-Run option - I believe that even with discounted volume licensing the older system can work out at a much higher cost to the majority of companies, and you end up paying, for example, for a copy of access, publisher, and powerpoint on the storeman's PC which will never be used, [except for personal use ]

It may be that the deal your company has made will allow for a number of the older type of licence to cover for remote / out of office workers, where click-to-rum may be a problem due to less than ideal net connections on the road, at home etc. - You may want to check with your systems people if this catagory applies to you, and the resource drain continues

There can also be licensing issues for out of office workers as this is normally controlled by an office "Key" server which regularly checks status of all licences used on machines, and so a standalone licenced install is preferred

I am a private user & as I wanted MS Access I had to purchase MS Office Pro 2013 complete. I could have bought only the office programs I wanted but it worked out cheaper to buy the whole suite, rather than individual ones.

As far as I know all Office 2013 programs are Click to Run, so there is no alternative.

As Barman58 has mentioned it might be wise to use your computer for few days to see whether the mouse issue stops.

Since this thread is near the top of searches on "samsung ssd 850 evo hourglass cursor", note that it can sometimes be resolved by deleting "OfficeFileCache" folders.

In my case, I deleted two “OfficeFileCache” folders, under both 14.0 and 15.0.
The 15.0 one was at:
“C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\15.0\OfficeFileCache”

The folder under 14.0 stayed gone, but the one under 15.0 immediately reappeared… just not bringing the cursor back with it.
