Hello! I have had this problem, since I went over to Windows 7 x64!

When I want to select multiple files in windows explorer ,as an example I left click and drag a rectangular marquee over the files.

However, if I do this now it always releases the selection randomly
even when I have not relished the button on the mouse.
It happens everywhere, select text. In Firefox,Word,Explorer and other applications it just drops the selection randomly.

This never happens in Win xp or Vista x64.Is there something wrong with a mouse driver?
I can say this has been an issue since the beginning of my installation of Windows 7 so I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with any applications I have installed.

Hello Thewiruz, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you do not already, you might see if using the single click to open a item option may work better with this. I find that using the double click to open a item option tends to select items to easily.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

You might check to see if there is a newer driver version available for your mouse to see if that may help. In addition as a test, try adjusting the "Double-click speed" mouse settings in the Control Panel to different speeds to see if it may just be a bit to sensitive.

It could be a physical problem in the mouse. Can you try with another mouse (maybe from a friend) and check if the same symptoms are exhibited ?

I just fixed this exact problem with my Performance Mouse MX (don't know if yours is a Logitech or not).

I used a can of compressor air dust remover and fired it under the front of the left mouse button. Problem now gone.

I get this exact problem! I have a Razer Copperhead mouse and never had this problem before until I installed Win 7 Ultimate x64. I do, however, notice that the problem is less frequent (dropping the mouse down that is) when I stop some processes, and an NVidia customer experience process seems to make the most difference. But I cannot get the problem to go away completely! I am sure it is a service or process that is causing the problem as it doesn't happen in safe mode oddly enough.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :) And if I get the problem completely solved I will post how I did it.

Sounds like a problem with the mouse itself and click button hardware.

Hmm... after much testing I am afraid you might be right! Although, the problem still happens much less in Safe Mode which seems like an odd coincidence. Nevertheless, the problem also doesn't happen at all with a different mouse, which is kind of a definitive answer I guess. Thank you for your response though, it is appreciated :)

Just wanted to say a huge THANK YOU to you, mistahsinclair! I am in a totally stressful time, and jigsaw puzzles and solitaire are among the very few things that manage to distract me from that stress...and w/my mouse misbehaving as described in this thread (not consistently grabbing, letting go in mid-grab), I was having no fun anymore trying to do either of these. I took your suggestion, blasted some air under the left mouse button, and voila! Problem solve, just as you said.

I went into the stress details in hopes that you might feel the full effect of the gift your advice has given me. I would never have thought of that dust issue (d-uh).

Thanks again!

So to re open this post but I started having issues with my MX Revo as well, I thought it was a virus/malware but it isn't. I did a system restore and nothing, uninstall/install new setpoint 5.1, nothing, I was so tired that I decided to deal with it another day.

I will try the Canned Air in hopes that something that simple fixes the issue and I am at an AWE that Logitech forums have no mention of this little jewel of a fix ;)

Being said that, I did find a link with another idea just in case others find it helpful as well.

I fixed my logitech mice by cleaning and re-tensioning the little spring in the micro switch.
Recently fixed my G700 and MX1000, and fixed my older MX1000 and MX Revolution last year doing the same thing.

Click and Drag Problems

Had the same problem dragging windows especially dragging to my second monitor. I found the problem was not the mouse. Going to"change display settings" in control panel, select each monitor one at a time and check the refresh rate settings for each. My main monitor was set at 59 and the second monitor at 23. These settings may be changed when you change video cards or update video drivers. Most modern monitors are set at 60 hrz. Resetting the proper refresh rate corrected all my mouse problems.

Although I know this thread is old..

I had the same setup and was getting a bit frustrated with the behaviour...

After dismissing the solution at first, I eventually gave it a try and it did work...

Thanks....

Same issue here

I have tried three different mice, all of which work fine on other machines. My preferred mouse is a Logitech M705. But in all cases, there are issues that make using the computer at all difficult:

1) left clicking generally double clicks
2) attempting to drag items with the left button held down either double clicks and opens the item, or the item drops before I release the button
3) resizing windows by dragging the borders is impossible
4) when attempting to select multiple words (in Word or any other program) by double clicking/holding a word and dragging to extend the selection is erratic and often selects the paragraph, and sometimes the whole page (particularly in a web browser).

I am convinced this is a Windows issue and not a mouse-specific issue as it also occurs with the built-in track pad. I thought perhaps it was an issue with my Windows profile, so I created a new one and attempted some of these tasks with a "virgin" profile. Same issues exist.

Any help on this is appreciated.
