Mozilla to Force FF Update

Status
Not open for further replies.
It's simple to me. Who ever owns the computer should make the choice. If a company wants to make their browser more secure then by all means go for it. Changing where all the little buttons and toots and whistles are located is not a upgrade to me. It's nothing but window dressing B/S. I tried FF4 and it lost all my settings and I didn't care to hunt and peck for 2 weeks trying to get it like I wanted it. Just because a program is free doesn't give the company the right to make my choices for me.

wtf ? what a nice way to think,..

thats shit, theres no stopping it though we'll be with Chrome 20 , IE 10 , Firefox 6 by the end of the year :) so yea go ahead and cry with your FF3.6

AND HELL, hopefully Windows 8 :)

you know layback bear is right it is his computer and it should be his decision if he upgrades or not. however if i'm on say ff 5 and i notice he's on say 3.6 i'm apt not to have anything to do with him because he's using an outdated browser that is most likely no longer safe to use.

Apparently some of you have not read the article. You have a choice to upgrade or not. FF options can be set to not update or to notify you when an update is available. Its still your choice. As far as FF GUI that is the choice of the developers and if you don't like it there are lots of other browsers available (also free). If you want to change FF do your own version as it is Open Source and you can do what you want with it. Google the web and you will find other versions of FF like Blue Moon and others that may suit you.

Upgrade. Kill old versions of software and hardware. Above all, kill XP.

I don't see any idea to kill Windows XP. XP is the most completed OS you can get. When it was perfect.. Windows 7 came.

People should have this optional and I don't see any idea in removing it.

FredeGail

For now. But what if they decide to force from 3.5-3.6 to 4.0+? It's the beginning of a slippery slope.

FF4 is fine... but I do agree that Mozilla should just stop FF3.5 support and let anyone use it. What harm can it do? And I'm using FF5 (beta) at the moment and it's no different from FF4. :/

Too true. Although I'm a Windows 7 fan too, Windows XP works and on top of that, it's really good. I'd even go far to say it's better than W7 (performance wise).

I don't think the XP upgrade problem would be so big if Vista hadn't been perceived as such a disaster. Upgrading one level of OS is generally easier than 2 or more.

I see what you mean kado. I never used Vista but I heard from friends that it was terrible. I skipped it and went straight to W7.
Anyway, back on topic. What's so bad about FF4 anyway?

Yes the company I worked for wouldn't touch it. I don't know if they have gone for 7 yet as I retired a few years ago.

There is nothing inherently wrong with FF. browsers are a matter of user preference. My order of preference at the moment is

1. Chrome.
2. Firefox.
3 IE9 (a very poor third).

But as I said that's just mine. I have no problem with others choices.

I never used FF 3.5. I started with 3.6 and the interface in FF4 is more like Chrome than 3.6 so if it is an interface problem I don't see how going to Chrome is a solution to that and the update policy on Chrome is automatic and it's difficult to change that.

That is the problem. You are assuming FF if FORCING an upgrade. That is not the case. If you have FF set for auto update then it will auto install the newer version. But you still have a choice. Check your FF options and take control of the update process. Its still under your control and you can stay on whatever version you want, just don't expect any support going forward for older versions.

Some people don't like programs making changes to their system that they don't know about and can't easily stop. It is the same reason a lot of people don't apply windows updates automatically. It is about having control over your machine.
