Computerworld - Mozilla plans to push 12 million users of the aged Firefox 3.5 to a newer version next month by taking the unprecedented step of automatically upgrading their browser.

Firefox 3.5, which debuted in mid-2009, is already on life-support: Mozilla gave users their last version 3.5 security patches three weeks ago.

And pushing me even more to Chrome.

One of my biggest peeves is auto-update software.

I'm with you. Although it mentions 3.5, the day they force me up from my 3.6.6 to 4 so I can no longer use "themes" is the day I dump it.

I don't think that day is far off. They are at 4 now and plan to release 5 soon. It's free, so they have little interest in supporting anything old.

I think they should just leave the 3.5 users alone, let them continue using it, and just drop support.

No problem for me. See no reason in maintaining less secure 3.5. Its a bit like using last years virus definitions.

...another reason why i use chromeplus

autoupdate.PNG

and when you do update, it keeps an old_chrome.exe available for use too.

(...although at the moment, there are a couple of minor bugs in taskbar previews in latest version...)

My Chrome doesn't auto-update. Go into MSConfig.exe and uncheck the google/chrome autoupdate under the startup tab.

Ah yes! Didn't think of that, but then I don't mind the auto update as I run the beta anyway.

I know that some, though maybe not all Firefox "themes" are available in 4.x as Extensions/Addons.:D

This auto-update is security update for sure.

Firefox 3.5 and possibly even 3.6x are not secure. They both use a basically outdated engine.

Staying on Firefox 3.x makes about as much sense as staying on Windows XP even XP SP3.

Besides
"We are treating the automatic update checkbox enabled as a 'Yes, I want Mozilla to keep me updated,'" Legnitto wrote.
so people can opt out if they have some reason to continue to use an outdated Browser.

Between the Personas and Addons it is no-problem unless there is a theme a user has a fetish about and it is not included in the Personas or Addons.

On the other hand you might wan't to delay an update until it had been shown to have no serious problems.

Thats Me!! I'm a theme fetish!

Personas are, well in my opinion, fancy coloured toolbar backgrounds and not themes.

I prefer auto updating software to that which I have to find the updates for myself and update. Just works better for me. It's also better for the software maker when everybody is running the same version so they can be assured that people aren't experiencing old issues that they have already fixed.

Just curious here, what are the pros to sticking with 3.5 that would otherwise make you cringe when you think about the v4 upgrade? ....other than the stated auto-update, which I understand both sides of the argument on.

Lack of speed. Since 3.6.6, which I'm running, it's getting slower. And slower. And slower. And bigger. And bigger. (Enough fimble!)
