Hi Guys and Gals I am a moran when it comes to computers I got a dvd with some files when I try to open it tells me MS-DOS and nothing happens can any one help me how to take those files of the CD and install on my computer I have windows 7

Besides the fact that MS-DOS was long gone when DVDs came out....
What extension (if any) do those files have ? If they're really MS-DOS executables, your best bet would be for some old games DOSBox, an x86 emulator with DOS
or for MS DOS itself this here might help

If it's some other kind of files you might be able to open them in Notepad or similar editors

Hi! tahir shah, welcome to 7F

It is possible you are working with two different file systems.

Try:
Open windows explorer, at the same time hold the Ctrl/Control key, and drag and drop the file onto the Document library/folder in the library.

Your holding the Ctrl key to make a copy to the Document library in case something goes wrong.

Then see if it will open there.

One other way:
Right click on file and "send to" compressed (zipped) folder.
Save it to desktop.

Open and extract it to wherever you were trying to copy it to.

You're right there, Anak...I had not only a lag but a full blown timeout...and my old habit I didn't read correctly.
I totally missed the part about shoveling the files over

Same here (timeout) even tried IE8 same thing. Seems okay now.....

I try every thing no help I have a dvd disk with some files on when take that file and dragthat PDF file to copy on Desk to it comes up saying invalid ms-dos function

Oh I see you try to copy over PDF files while you get that error.

Well it could be a timing error. A combination of your virus scanner interfering with the copy process and a poorly burned Disc.
Try the following: shut down you Anti virus and try to copy the PDF again (Don't forget to turn your AV back on, once you're done) And scan those files manually afterwards just to be on the safe side

If I might add to the other comments:

1) Scan the file with AV before you copy to your system (if you have MSE, right click on the item and choose scan)

2) Then try:

a) right click on the file, choose Copy
b) right click on your dektop, choose Paste


If this doesn't work, try to post back with the exact error message.


Also, it would be helpful if you would tell us exactly what you are trying to do? Just copy a pdf to desktop, or something more?

My guess is the files on the DVD are corrupt or they weren't burned properly in the first place

It would help tremendously if you would give us the file extensions of the
files on the dvd.

You can print a directory of your dvd by going to the start/run/cmd
line and then
typing

dir d:\*.* >dvdfiles.txt (assuming that D: is your dvd drive, change if it isn't)

this will create a file in your default directory called dvdfiles.txt
You can then use windows explorer to navigate to your directory and
double click the .txt file. It will come up in notepad and you then can
copy and paste them into a message letting us know what files and extensions
are on the disk.
As long as it is not a real long listing, if so then just copy some pertinant
parts to a message here.

tahir, have you tried Sledges tip yet?

In my research this is coming out to be the winning suggestion, if that doesn't work extracting the files with Isobuster is the next option.

If all else fails can you get the DVD back to the DVD writer that it was burned on, to see if it can read it?
