Are you using the paid version of AVG? If so stick with it.

However if it is the free version you might like to try MSE.
**Don't forget to uninstall AVG first.**
You could always go back to AVG again later if you wish.

[Personally I would recommend that you stay with AVG.]

Hi there
Seems on this Forum you are one of "The Security Bods" -- so again "What's the probs with MSE".

Is it Slow (it isn't) ,
Does it fail to find "nasties" -- no more than most out there and it's quite good.
Is it easy to install / uninstall -- yes
Does it intefere with running applications on your PC -- Doesn't appear to
Virus / definition data base updated frequently --yes definitely -- often daily
Does it cost anything -- NO

C'mon guy - you seem to have got a reputation of "Security Guru" so please give some proper informative answers.

The current answer you've given is just as uninformative as the previous one.

I can only surmise from the two answers you've made that you probably don't know -- no problem with that - we all certainly have loads of things we don't know about but misleading info is actually worse than none.

Hi Seekermeister

for W server use 2008 Microsoft Forefront Client security roughly similar to MSE with more features suitable to servers. Download FREE 180 Day trial (or FREE unlimited if you are technet subscriber).

To install on a Stand alone computer (including a server) don't run the setup.exe but get into an elevated DOS prompt , switch to the X-64 CLIENT directory and execute the command clientsetup / nomom.

Works a treat - actually I'm using it on a W7 X-64 computer too.

Cheers
jimbo

I hate MSE because of its weak antispyware protection. No wonder its a strong antivirus, but it lacks better detection of SPYWARE. Also, 45-55 MB RAM usage. It needs some maturity. Its an infant IMO.

I use MSE because my employer-supplied (and frequently updated) McAfee was (and for all I know still is) 7-incompatible. MSE has caught things on my home PC running 7 that fully up-to-date McAfee missed on my work PC running XP.

I realise that my experience isn't exactly definitive evidence, but the ease of use of MSE, its documented ability to catch problem files that other scanners have missed, its frequent updates, and its very attractive price ;) make it a winner in my eyes.

Hi there
I tend to agree with you -- after all who should know better about the OS than the developer itself (MS) and they have the resources to keep this stuff up to date.

IMO apart for some corporates who probably have "Maintenance Plans" in place I would expect that way before the 2012 London Olympic Games for Home computers at least PAID FOR AV software will have gone the way of the Dodo.

Cheers

Do you know the Avast doesn't like torrents? It... (you should know what I mean) ;)

The Avast P2P shield has an issue with uTorrent, but not other torrent(s) or torrent programs. uTorrent creates the entire file and then adds to the file as it downloads which causes Avast to scan the file over and over again even though it doesn't need to. This is why uTorrent is ticked off by default in the P2P shield withing Avast Beta 5.

I use Avast and uTorrent and don't have an issue with this. I don't need Avast scanning the files until I try to run them so I leave it ticked off by default within the Avast shield. No big deal to me.

Hello TheIgster,

Sure, but I don't use Avast anymore, I stopped using it three years ago. I use MSE right now. I even don't know that I'm using it, it's so light on the system. For me, it's a winner. :)

Dinesh my friend, it's time to upgrade the RAM on your system in such case. ;) The 55MB of RAM...big deal, your system usually uses up to 1GB RAM what about the rest, Use it.

My testing with MSE has been real promising so I now load it on all new builds. I don't run it myself as it's lack of basic features is a problem for me. I have a few apps that all virus programs mis-identify and a Trojan and immediately delete the exe so have to be able to easily disable auto-protect prior to running them.

Otherwise it works very well,

Just over 7MB of RAM usage on my system - and that's while it's scanning! It doesn't seem to change whether it is just monitoring or actively scanning disks, and 7MB of RAM is not much of a load.

In-spite of the bad reputation that Norton has earn since the release of Norton Anti-Virus 2004 and all subsequent crap, NIS 2010 is an excellent product. ;)
