MS Works unable to save as .doc

I’m using MS Works 7.0 & tried to save a document as either “Word 97-2003 Document (.doc)” or “Word 2010 Document (.docx)”.

But I get message that “Works cannot save ‘filename‘. There may not be enough space on the computer or Works cannot save the file to the specified destination”.

It’s supposed to be as simple as explained here, but it’s not happening.

Yet I can save as “Rich Text Format (.rtf)” and “Word 97-2002 & 6.0/95 - RTF (.doc)”.

Obviously I have enough space & can save to the same destination. Any suggestions on what is causing the problem?

It appears that 'Works 7' is working as per 'design'. Please refer to the following 'web article' to find the 'file formats' supported by 'Works 7': File formats that are supported in Works

It gives the list of all the save-able 'file formats' supported by 'Works 7.0 word processor' module. It includes the 'Rich Text Format (.rtf)' and 'Word 97-2002 & 6.0/95 - RTF (.doc)'; and both are functional in your case currently.

I saw that article. However my Works 7.0 also includes save-able formats of "Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc)" and "Word 2007 Document (*.docx), just like mentioned here & at several other places.

MS's link does not list .docx yet I have it & apparently so do other people.

When I do a cut & paste into Works I almost always have to "paste special", unless I'm cutting from another .wps document. If I just use "paste" I get a message that I do not have enough memory on my computer. And that sounds similar to the "may not be enough space on the computer" when I'm trying to save as .docx.

I wonder if both of the "not enough" messages are somehow related.

I tried but could not find any valid information that allows saving the .wps file in 'docx' format. While researching, I came across the following discussion that you may find useful: How To Convert WPS Files To DOC Files

I don’t have a problem converting using MS Word. I just want to use MS Works to save as .doc or .docx in the first place. These options are mentioned in the second link that I provided where it states the options of "Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc)" or "Word 2007 Document (*.docx)".

The first link I provided states the option of “Word 97-2003 (*.doc)”.

Yet neither one of these formats is mentioned in “File formats that are supported in Works”.

Again, it appears other people do have the same “save as” options that I have. If these for other people they should work for me.

.rtf can be opened with Word. If you don't have Word, install the Word Viewer (free) and test it. Use 'Open with'.

Looks like you beat me before I could a could an attachment showing my options.

As mentioned I do have MS Word, but it is way overkill for most of the short notes that I write. I usually use Works because it is fast & simple & I don't need all those toolbar options in Word.

Why don't you use WordPad instead. It's in Accessories. I pinned it to the taskbar. So it is always easily accessible.

I thought using WordPad but it does not have a spell checker.
