MSE + what else

I've looked at the forum information but would still like to ask:
I plan to not renew by McAfee license in 2 weeks and use
1) MSE
2) Malwarebytes for additional scans

Is this sufficent, generally speaking.

Also, if I wanted a free site advisor are there any recommendations - thanks.

Generally speaking it is. Occasionally, I will also use this on-line scanner:

Free ESET Online Antivirus Scanner

For files that I think are suspicious, I will use this:

ThreatExpert - Automated Threat Analysis

Apart from that, a good NAT router, Windows Firewall, and common sense when browsing/downloading is all you need

I use that setup, I also keep Hitman Pro on hand for the same reason that I use Malwarebytes' for which is a secondary scanner.

I haven't been infected yet, well not that I know of anyway.

Common sense & safe web practise goes along way in staying malware free on the internet

the only problem with common sense it is often common after the fact. The one thing McAfee has done was steer me away from some very legitimate looking sites. Now this could be just a window dressing feature.

They have standalone toolbar for reviewing websites - McAfee SiteAdvisor Software which I think is kinda the same as what they offer in their security suite?

Or there's Web of Trust which is what I use, it's website ratings are user rated but I like to use it, kept me outta trouble quite often so it goes on my small list of add-ons to install with a new browser or Windows install

I understand what you mean by that - I learnt my lessons the hard way. Having said that, don't you think the very fact that you are carefully planning your software switch in fact demonstrates your own common sense? I think it does.

Unfortunately, there isn't a piece of software yet developed that can protect us from ourselves 100% of the time : its human-nature to want to short-cut/break the rules. We know speeding is dangerous, so why do we still do it despite the fines etc.

The best you can do, is have the so-called layered approach, and just be a little bit careful about where you end up browsing too.

I know its a cliche, but in this case its better to be safe than sorry.

I usually use Superantispyware in lieu of Malwarebytes. On a couple of occasions it found more things than MB.

I use MSE, MS firewall, MBAM, SASW and a whole lot of common sense!

• Hitman Pro
• SpywareBlaster
• VirusTotal Uploader
• Emsisoft Anti-Malware

Safe browsing tools:

• Norton Safe Web
• McAfee Site Advisor
• PCTools BrowserDefender

Windows Firewall is generally safe, but if you want advanced protection, use Comodo Firewall.

+1 for sandboxie. all you need is MSE and sandboxie. its almost fool-proof. run your browser in sandboxie and if anything slips by MSE, sandboxie is there to contain it. all you need to do is clean out the sandboxie container and everything will be normal again. nothing ever touch your HD.

I'd say MSE and AVG are pretty much overlapping.

I'd get something that concentrated more on malware, such as Malware Bytes or Super Anti Spyware.

You cannot run MSE and AVG together. Apart from it making a mess, AVG is completely useless. If you want to run something with MSE, use Avast. At least they have been tested together: Threatfire Test with MSE and Avast 5 |

I'm using MSE with Malwarebytes. Also using VirusTotal Uploader.Before MSE I was using NOD32 with combination of Malwarebytes.

We can't have Avast and MSE together. I think that was because of the blog in 2009 which made a lot of confusion of Avast and MSE being compatible.

This is the blog that the Threatfire Test with MSE and Avast 5 | was referring to. As you can see, there was no follow up and no official declaration that Avast 5 can be used with MSE.

Avast with Microsoft Security Essentials

Then few months later, they are saying the opposite

Avast Home 4.8 or Microsoft Security essentials
Avast Home Edition as opposed to Microsoft Security Essentials

Posts from social.answers.microsoft.com said no we can't have these two together and not just Avast, other antiviruses cannot be used with MSE.

You can use MBAM, SAS, the usual stuff with MSE

I'll probably be running with MSE + Malwarebytes and no site advisor.
MS appear to have got it right with MSE - we'll see.

Keeping quite a few and regular images is the other safeguard I'll be using.
