I'm getting the "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item" when I try to open MSE. It's not showing in the system tray, I'm trying to open from the start menu. I have Windows 7, 64bit. I also tried uninstalling and got a similar error message.

nellia,

Thank you for starting your own topic.

Let's try to find the cause...

:info: Please use the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool
Download: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/farbar-recovery-scan-tool/
Select the version that applies to your system (64-bit).
Save it to your Desktop.

Double-click the downloaded file to run it.
When the tool opens click Yes to the disclaimer.

Press the Scan button.

The tool makes a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory from which the tool is run (Desktop).
:ar: Please provide the FRST.txt in your reply.

The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log: Addition.txt
:ar: Also post the Addition.txt in your reply.

:info: Next, download the Farbar Service Scanner
Save to the Desktop
  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center
    • Windows Update
    • Windows Defender
  • Press: Scan
  • FSS creates a log, FSS.txt, on the Desktop.
:ar: Please provide the FSS.txt in your reply.

Fine for me...I'm retired!
Let's start with FRST...

Please open Notepad (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad)
Copy the entire contents of the code box below
Save it to the Desktop, and name it: fixlist.txt

Code:
start

end

Once again, double-click FRST to run it.
When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
Press the Fix button, only once, and wait.

When done, FRST produces Fixlog.txt on the Desktop.
:ar: Please provide the Fixlog.txt on your reply.

There is more to do to get the system cleaned up, however, let's get the FRST results, and take it from there.

Thanks.

Honestly don't know. I had to step away from the computer and my husband was using it so he may have rebooted (pretty likely since he thinks this always fixes a slow computer)

Jacee,

It looks as if all the posts in the thread were copied.

Hopefully, there was a reboot, if not, please do so, nellia.

Moving on...

There are a few issues showing on the FSS report.

Let's see if the following tool can take care of them. If not, we will need to go at it manually.

Please stay with this, as not doing so at this point may complicate matters.

:info: Since the following steps involve editing the Registry, please create new restore point before proceeding.
System Restore Point - Create
Select: Option Two

:info: Now, please download the ESET ServiceRepair tool:
http://kb.eset.com/library/ESET/KB%2...icesRepair.exe
(Direct link only available)
Save to the Desktop.
Double-click to run the downloaded file.

When the program runs, a prompt appears asking if you want to proceed.
Click: Yes
When the Services routine is Completed, you are asked to Reboot.
Click Yes to allow the reboot.

The tool creates a folder named CC Support on the Desktop.
:ar: Please provide the CC Support\Logs\SvcRepair.txt in your reply.

:ar: Next, please run the Farbar Service Scanner once again, and provide the FSS.txt in your reply.

nellia,

How old are your little wieners?
Short, or long hair?

Had wieners for the last 50 years, one, two, or
Cottonball passed on last year.

Have 3 right now:
A 10 year old piebald named Schnitzel. He is in charge of naps, all day long.
A 9 year old chocolate/tan named Trooper. He is in charge of Security Operations, Low to the Groung Division. (SOLGD)
A 5 year old black/tan longhair named Liesl. She is a First Alert wiener, and barks at anything that moves.

Can't live without them.
They all came from here:
Dachshund Rescue of St. Louis

Let's press on with some cleaning...

:info: Please download the Temporary File Cleaner (TFC)
http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/TFC.exe
Save to your Desktop.
Save any work in progress!! TFC closes open applications and removes unsaved work!! Close all windows.
Right-click TFC.exe and select: Run as Administrator
If prompted, click Yes to reboot.

:info: Next, download AdwCleaner to the Desktop.
http://general-changelog-team.fr/fr/...e/2-adwcleaner
•Close all open programs and internet browsers.
•Double-click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
•Click the Scan button and wait for the process to complete.

If you find entries or programs you wish to keep, please uncheck them.
Click on the Clean button to remove the rest, and follow the prompts.

A report automatically opens after the scan is finished.

:ar: Please post the content of C:\AdwCleaner[Sn].txt your reply.

:info: Next, please run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware:
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Download
Save to the Desktop
Double-click the downloaded MBAM file to run it.

When the installation begins, follow the prompts in the setup process.
Do not make any changes to default settings and when the program has finished installing, make sure only the following options are checked:
>Update Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware
>Launch Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware
Uncheck:
>Enable free trial of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware PRO
Click on the Finish button.

If an update is found, the program automatically updates itself.
At the program console, on the Scanner tab, and select: Perform Quick Scan

Next, click on the Scan button.

When the Malwarebytes scan is completed, click on: Show Results
When presented with a screen showing the malware detected, make sure everything is Checked, and click on: Remove Selected

When removal is completed, a report opens in Notepad.

:ar: Please copy/paste the entire contents of the MBAM report in your reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you are asked to reboot the computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) prevents MBAM from removing all the malware.

Let’s check the system's Security status with the following...

:info: Download Security Check:
http://screen317.spywareinfoforum.org/
Save to your Desktop.
Double-click: SecurityCheck.exe
Follow the onscreen instructions inside the black box.
The scan may take a few minutes...

When done, a Notepad report opens automatically, called: checkup.txt

:ar: Please post the checkup.txt in your reply.
(Please do not take any corrective actions!)
