MSI P965 Neo & CD/DVD drive incompatibilities on Windows 7 Ultimate 64

Hi,

Here is my system info:
Motherboard - MSI P965 Neo (BIOS v1.6)
CPU - Core 2 Duo E6600 2,4GHz
RAM - 4GB DDR2
HDD's - 2 x WD 640GB Caviar Black (7200RPM) + 1 x SEAGATE 1TB (7200RPM)
OPTICAL - SONY DVD RW DRU-800A + LITE-ON DVDRW SHM-165H6S + LG HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GSA-H55L
VGA - NVIDIA GTS450
Screens - SAMSUNG Syncmaster P2450 (x 2)
Sound Card - SB Audigy + ESI ESP1010

I have had the above setup running on a dual boot of Windows XP SP3 32 bit for years (since 2006). The main reason for the dual boot is that one of the WD drives runs my gaming / internet / graphics setup, and the other drive is loaded with my music production setup (hence the 2 sound cards).

I also have several external drives as backup storage for software, documents, music & games etc. All attached devices were working 100% when everything was Windows XP on both sides.

But due to having to upgrade, after some games were not running on Windows XP, I went to Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit SP 1, late last year (2012) and installed all the 64 bit software I could find.

I started noticing that I could not burn any type of CD / DVD from the LITE-ON or the LG drives, and only the SONY drive was being seen in burning software or being able to write to media.

The other two drives are being seen by the OS, and are also of the latest firmware version. I can insert media and they will read it via Windows Explorer, but I cannot write anything with these two drives, from any of the software I used. In Device Manager (including any other system info software) I do not get any errors showing on the optical drives, and they are "Ok".

I initially thought it was an error with the software, but I soon picked up it was the OS & the CD/DVD drives not "talking" to each other for burning.

When I boot into Windows XP side, all the drives still read and write as per normal. It is only the Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit side that does not seem to be writing with these drives.

What can I do to fix this?

F.Y.I. MSI's OFFICIAL response to the same info:

"Dear sir/madam Thanks for contacting MSI technical support. Regarding your concern,as this MB has been phase out for a long time and the chip vendor did not support chipset drivers for windows7 os,we also did not test it with windows7 os,thus we cannot guarantee that the MB can support windows7 os. Thanks for your cooperation in advance! Best Regards, MSI Technical Support Team"

Install under Windows 7

Hi there, thanks for this. I tried installing it and rebooted. And still nothing. The two optical devices are still not seen in some software, and also do not write in software like iTunes.

Ok, found a solution to my problem.

Since the last post and my last attempts at the possible solutions, I recently had the one drive that was working (SONY DRU-800A) not show up in my Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit install. When I log onto the Windows XP Pro SP3 installation, the optical drive showed as an "Removable Hard Disk" (which is obviously a clue something was wrong). Also, in Disk Management the SONY drive would not appear at all.

So that was that, SONY optical drive was dead.

So now I removed it from the IDE slot it occupied on the Motherboard, and then I figured I might as well just connect the remaining two optical drives (Lite-On and the LG) onto one IDE cable, and see what happens. I switched the one drive's jumper to SLAVE (as previously all my optical drives were MASTER - due to the two being on an expansion IDE card).

When I rebooted, **BOOM** Problem solved. The optical drives that were previously only reading, were now reading AND writing in all the software that can burn on both the Windows XP and the Windows 7 installs.

So seemingly the IDE expansion card wasn't playing too well with Windows 7, but eventually one of the drives was also failing as well.

Hope the info can help someone else (whoever still uses such outdated gear like mine)

I know, don't say it (or think it), but an upgrade is imminent.

Cheers. :)
