Solved Multiple different BSoDs

For quite a while now I've been getting unpredictable BSoDs and freezes. Sometimes my PC would be fine for weeks/months at a time and suddenly I'll get heaps within a day or two.

They seem to happen at all sorts of times:
  • When the PC is idle
  • When watching a video with VLC player
  • During the startup of Windows (sometimes I wouldn't even get a BSoD and the PC would just try restarting again)
  • In Google Chrome
  • In CoD4
  • In GW2

Only some of the most recent .dmp files are in the attached zip folder, if Windows has created others I wouldn't know where they are. My system specs are on my profile.

Some of the BSoD STOP codes I've come across (over many months, generally in order from oldest to most recent) include:
  • 0A ("IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL")
  • 50 ("PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA")
  • C9 ("HIDCLASS.SYS")
  • 10E (The video memory manager has encountered an unexpected fatal error.)
  • 3B ("SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION") (More than once, but with varying codes in the brackets. One of the 3B BSoDs also showed "aswSnx.sys")
  • 7E ("dxgkrnl.sys")
  • 7E ("dxgmms1.sys")
  • 7E (no other info besides the codes in the brackets)
  • 1E (More than once, but with varying codes in the brackets. Immediately before one of these 1E BSoDs, I caught a glimpse of Google Chrome failing to load a webpage ("Aw snap! Something went wrong..." or whatever it says)
  • 7E ("nvlddmkm.sys")

Things I've tried:
  • Reinstalling NVIDIA drivers (both the normal way as well as a 'clean' install)
  • Cleaning PC (including inside the CPU and graphics card)
  • Checking that the C Drive has 15+% of free space on it
  • Running Memtest86 (I reached pass 9 with 0 errors)
  • Driver Verifier (Windows couldn't even boot so I had to disable it via safe mode.
  • Full system scan with Avast (0 detections but several things that it couldn't scan, which according to Google is probably just related to Avast)
  • sfc /scannow (could not repair the files "utc.app.json" + "telemetry.ASM-WindowsDefault.json"...these seem to be old buggy files in an old Windows update that has long since been addressed?)
  • Checked hard drives for errors, having checked both checkboxes (no problems on any of my 4 hard drives)
  • WhoCrashed (repeatedly said that a driver was likely responsible)

As an impatient noob/intermediate user I'm scared to mess around with the registry and BIOS.

I appreciate any help!

Hiya and welcome to SevenForums!:orb:

Run sfc /scannow and chkdsk /r.
Install the latest updates from Windows Update.

Do the exact same steps for chkdsk /r but instead of typing in sfc /scannow type chkdsk /r.

Ok, the sfc /scannow kept reporting the same .json files until I tried the System Update Readiness Tool and installed some optional Windows updates. Now it reports no violations. One of the update's knowledge articles mentioned "telemetry" which I recognised from one of the .json problem files in my first post. If ignoring an optional Windows update causes BSoDs, why wouldn't they just class it as an important one?!

Anyway, I'm pretty sure it's fine now, although I can go for months at a time without a single BSoD. :P

Thanks for the help Laith! :)

Today I got another two BSoDs (I think Google Chrome was the only thing running on both occasions). The first one was 1E and soon after that I got the 19 error ("BAD_POOL_HEADER"). Here's the new zip...I think there's only 1 new dump file. No idea what I should do now :(

With a new AMD based PC I had the same problem - lots of BSOD with different 'causes'.

Initially I thought the problem was I was running the PC with the cover of and possibly an overheating problem. Running with the cover on the BSOD's stopped (for a while) until I got one with: 'IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL'

Searching MS, there was a hotfix for this back in 2013 and said it fixed a problem in handling power management functions. Since my Win7 already has all updates applied, I turned OFF all Power Saving/Management options in Win7 and the AMD BIOS.

I have been running smoothly for 12 hours now (previously, about 30 mins was maximum)

If I continue running problem free for a couple of days, I will test turning each of the Power functions back on one-by-one and see if I can isolate which option causes the problem

sfc /scannow result: "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

Windows has finished checking your disk.
Please wait while your computer restarts.

Since I've had heaps of blue screens since this scan, I guess the 'corrections to the file system' Windows made haven't fixed it. Chkdsk didn't show any problems with my other 3 drives.

All Windows Updates were installed except for these 2 optional updates:
  • Razer Inc - Other Hardware - Razer DeathAdder 3.5G
  • nVidia - Graphics Adapter WDDM1.1, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.2, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.3 - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470

After visiting https://forums.geforce.com/default/...-windows-update-graphics-adapter-wddm-update/ I decided not to get this update. Also, I just did a clean install of my GTX470 drivers following this method: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/327414-nvidia-drivers-avoid-problems.html This hasn't helped because I've had at least 1 blue screen since.

BSoDs - Album on Imgur

These are some of the blue screens I've had since November last year. I was going to upload these with my first post but then I saw the BSoD posting instructions thread. The last 3 photos were all taken today.

Thanks for the tips. I double checked Driver Verifier was disabled and it was.

I ran Furmark's burn-in test according to the guide you linked me. I got to around 1 minute 40 seconds without noticing any artifacts but my temperature had reached 96 degrees at that point so I stopped the test. Just in case this means anything, I did the 1080 (FHD) benchmark and here are my results: GPU, OpenGL and OpenCL database

I'll give Prime95, MemTest86+ and any SSD tools a go soon.

After my latest BSoD, it took about 8 presses of my reset button before my computer actually started up (nothing would show on the monitor, and my CD drive(?) would make a quick whirring noise every few seconds). This wasn't the first time that my computer has been unable to boot on the first go.

After running Prime95 for about 45 minutes I got worried by the temperatures:

Should I have kept it running? You definitely don't wanna reach TjMAX temperatures, right?

The CPU's fan/s, thermal paste, or both? Do you think my overheating CPU is the cause of all this? Even crashes/BSoDs when the PC is idle?

Also, should I still go ahead with Memtest86+?

Thanks :)

The CPU should come with a bit of thermal paste. Possibly.

Run MemTest86+, yes.

Other than replacing the CPU cooler, is there anything else I should do? Update any drivers?
