Multitude of Issues - Please Help

Hello all,

I could have put this in so many different places because I've been having so many issues, but since I'm not trying to Reinstall, this section seems most appropriate.

The quick and dirty history of my problems is this:
- Started about a month ago with slow-downs, freezes, and random pop-ups
- Progressed to the point where my computer would freeze all the time, programs would constantly "Not Respond", and I would have to use the power button on my laptop to restart.
- Eventually this is how every single windows session would go: Start up computer, load up Firefox, 2 minutes later it would freeze, no other programs would load, I couldn't click on anything, and I'd have to force the shutdown.
- 4 days ago I gave up and decided to reinstall Windows 7, so I inserted my disc and booted from the CD-ROM.
- Unfortunately after choosing the "Custom Install" option in order to erase all my files that were giving me problems, Windows would not reinstall.
- It would Copy the Files just fine, but step 2, "Expanding the files" would just freeze up and I'd get a message saying that "Windows cannot install required files. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation."
- Upon exiting from this screen I get this: "rollback.exe Application Error. The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000005). Click OK to close the application.
- Tried again several times, same result.
- Decided to try the Upgrade route instead. It won't let me because it tells me to start up the computer normally, insert the disk while in Windows and then proceed from there.
- If I try to boot up without the Windows disk now I get the Startup Repair screens.
- The computer attempts repairs, and fails.
- I click Advanced Options and try to run System Restore, but there's no restore point.
- I run Memory Diagnostic and everything is fine.
- Startup Repair details tells me that the boot configuration is corrupt.
- Booting from the Windows disc again, click on "Repair Your Computer" and it loads up a window with no text on it and 2 blank buttons... Obviously this is completely screwed up. Only once did it actually load up the proper screen, which took me nowhere because I don't have a restore point apparently.

Is there any hope for me? Or should I just buy a new hard drive, a new version of Windows 7, and call it a day?

Please, any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi Steve and welcome to Seven Forums!

You likely need to wipe your HD of the corrupt boot sector, possible infection or other bad code.

If Win7 won't boot to install correctly then, test your HD using maker's diag/repair full CD scan: Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp. followed by http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html run from the DVD Repair Console Command Line.

Where did you get Win7? Is the DVD dirty or damaged? Did you burn the DVD yourself? Burn another at 4x speed using ImgBurn if so.

Thank you so much for the information. It's been a great help. I chose to wipe the drive and start from scratch.

Unfortunately, it didn't quite go as planned. The wipe was successful. I ran the "clean all", I created the new partition, and I tried the installation again.

Once again I got the rollback.exe Application Error. "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000005). Click OK to close the application."

It gives me this error once I get to the "Expanding the Files" part of the installation quite early on.

I've looked a little into what rollback.exe is but I still don't know how to fix the problem.

I'm going to try another Windows 7 disk and see if that changes anything, but can you still tell me how you think I can resolve my rollback.exe problem?
