Solved Mum and cat files request

Afternoon all

Could I request a kind soul zip up the following CAT and MUM files for me? Checksur is missing them and I can't find them on another machine. Not sure why all the different language versions are required either.

Windows 7 Home Prem SP1 x64

I think that this is fixable - but it's going to take a while for me to get everything together, and I have some other things to catch up first.

Thanks! It was a lot more than that before but I built a Win7home prem sp1 x64 bit machine seperatley, fully patched it and tried copying all the cats/mums in from that but for some reason it's still missing a load :(

PS, already done a full hard drive diagnostic, chkdsk and sfc scan. Diagnostic says disk is fine, chkdsk comes back clean but sfc scan says its unable to repair all files (prob due to missing mum/cats)

I cheated and uploaded all the cat/mum files for three updates. :)


I've uploaded a file - o21aa.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel's OneDrive
Please download and save it.
Right-click on the downloaded file, and select Extract all…
Extract to the default location - which will create a new folder o21aa in the same place.
Open this folder - there should be one folder inside it ( Packages)

Copy the content of the Packages folder to the folder
C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages


Now run the CheckSUR tool again (it may take a while)

Post the new CheckSUR.log file, and the CheckSUR.persist.log file.

With luck I've got all except possibly two of them now :)

New file o21ab.zip - same procedure, same location.

Rightio Noel, definatley getting there! Chucksur is sorted, fixed everything there but when trying to install the last of my Windows updates (KB2830477) I'm getting a 8007371B error.

Also, sfc /scannow is failing saying it can't repair the problem.

I've attached the Checksur output and CBS logs.

There are a huge number of errors in the CBS.log (despite the fact that a search only defines 16 errors, each is derived from a number of others.)

Have you considered the idea of a Repair install? - I am pretty certain that it would fix your problems, and result in a decent working OS< rather than one which is likely to be flaky for the foreseeable future!

I tried that, but it came up saying it didn't know what language to install :( I suspect it's due to it being an OEM build and I just have a vanilla Win7 Home Prem SP1 x64 disc. It's a friends laptop, so I don't want to wipe and start again (even though that's what I'd do with my equipment...)

I have built another donor Win7 Home Prem SP1 x64 machine, if you can identify which files I need to replace, I can attempt that? I can even slave the OS drive into another machine to replace the files in case the files I need to replace are in use?

Unfortunately, Windows Updates are designed not to be capable of over-installs, to prevent what used to be known as dll-hell.

I suspect that somewhere along the way of your repairs, you've managed to corrupt the basic install to the point that the system is no longer sure what it's supposed to be - or perhaps the original user installed a hack to bypass language restrictions and that is now coming back to bite. :(
 
Many of the above errors I would expect to produce equivalent errors in the CheckSUR report, which could allow subsequent repair - this doesn't seem to be the case here.
Registry corruption may be the prime cause, and such corruption is notoriously difficult to isolate and fix in the absence of specific tools. One thing is totally certain - NO registry 'cleaner' can assist! Such tools may even be the cause of the problem in the first place.

I remember clearing a few "PC optimisation" type tools off of this laptop a few months ago, so maybe they led to it's demise. The OS works perfectly fine, it's just I fear this single Windows update and maybe future one's will fail to install.

Is it worth running SFC from another good machine with the HDD of this faulty one slaved in? Using offbootdir/offwindir? Would that aid the repair at all?

Also, are the registry specific tools you mention freely available or are they costly?

Not a chance, I'm afraid.

The errors will not be cured by anything short of pretty major surgery, and may only be the tip of the iceberg.
I am actually amazed at how much corruption is required to make Windows fall over in a major way - and a year or so in the WU forum here has persuaded me that repair (or even clean) installs are sometimes inevitable in order to avoid larger problems down the line.

It's fairly certain that with this type of error present, Windows Update will barf on at least come (if not all) updates in the near future - you could always try installing tomorrow's batch and see what happens! :)
