MW2 Rank Reset

Hi guys,

I was playing then I wanted to exit the game and as soon as I clicked on quit it froze and I had to restart. When I came back on my rank was reset to 1. I have tried looking at the "players" file to see if there are any previous versions as I'm running windows 7 but no luck. Is there any way to get my rank back to what it was? Will a system restore work in this case?

Hi Guys,

There are a couple things you can try.

Method 1:

1. Browse to:
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\call of duty modern warfare 2

or for 64bit Windows
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\call of duty modern warfare 2

2. Right Click on the "players" directory and click propeties.

3. Click the "Previous Versions" tab

4. If you have previous versions listed then your in luck.

5. Copy the "players" folder to "Players - Old" so that you have a backup.

6. Delete the contents of the existing "players" folder and copy the files from previous version back in to the dir.

7. Restart MW2.

• Go to the Steam folder and find the Modern Warfare 2 install folder
  • Default location: C:\Program Files\Steam\Steamapps\common\call of duty modern warfare 2\
• Open the \players\ folder
• The multiplayer profile is updated regularly as a .stat file and also includes a backup file.
  • All original profile files begin with md202ef8d and backup files will begin with md202ef8d.bak
• Locate the profile and backup .stat files with the most recent "Date Modified" listed in Windows
• Move the profile .stat file to a new location (Creating a new folder and placing it here should be fine)
• Rename the backup .stat file and remove the ".bak" from the filename
• Launch Steam and re-test this game.

Sorry that didn't work out for you.

I would contact Steam. Your account stats are held online and Steam "should" be able to retrieve it for you... you may only have to just ask? If that fails, then you'll probably just have to rank up again.

I would forget about any sort of satisfaction from Infinity Ward though... they've pretty much given the PC community the finger with this game... so I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for them to help you out.

I had my stats reset in both CoD4:MW and CoD:WaW so this is not a new problem with CoD games

I don't know what kind of help you will get from Steam but sadly I think if your stats reset you will have to rank up again and this time backup your stats as you go along

I have been backing up my profiles/stats/saves to a separtate location since the first reset happened, doing a similar process like Fumz describes
