My harddrive eating up space! :S

Hello, my local disk (C:\) is barely any files on it (except from some games) its aprox 17-18gb of games and stuff there, but when i run a disk analyzer it stands that its 45gb of files, and the only thing i have there is some text documents like some install s*** and stuff

Hi Lazyfunker,

It is system Restore points and Shadow Copies taking up the space. You can read Brink's tutorials on Disk Cleanup and System Restore.

And also read this one, it will explain why it takes up space.

But Read the warnings, if you delete all but the last restore point to get your space back, you won't have the other points to fall back on if you need them.

Uhm... I just installed Vista on my C HW now so I will wait a little a bit before i will delete the system restore. Thanks for the help btw.


But i dont think it will take up space on C when i got it installed on my D drive

Better check your System Restore settings - be default it comes enabled on all partitions and drives, IIRC....

Mine was disabled and set at about 1gb space after install.

Not mine - all three of my HDs had it enabled and I had to manually disable them.

Then again, I don't have any other OSs booting on this machine at the moment....

Welp, I have 7 on a 50 gig partition and I found it to be disabled and about 1 gig of usable space when I discovered that there was no "More Options" Tab using the same steps for Disk Cleanup as in Vista. I told Shawn in the Disk Cleanup tutorial.

Mine was only active on C:, set at 12% if I remember correctly; it's now set at 4GB.

I was booting Vista and XP when I installed 7000 this time. (to get a pic )

A time ago i tested something on that drive, i used it for speeding up my system.... Now i formatted both my drives, i have three (hp recovery E drive and my C drive) i use my D drive to boot from but now it didnt boot :S so im running a error check.

is it safe to assume that you formatted C and D, or D and E, or...?

I did format my C and E drive. My OS is running on my D drive.

If I understand correctly (and I may not), even if you install the OS on other than the C drive, the MBR is still written to the C drive. Thus no boot. Probably have to reinstall the OS to regain the boot record at this point. May be another way, but I am unaware of it.

Yes, it seems like it is like that, so i will install a clean copy tomorrow from my cd. Then i will install that into my C drive.


But can i copy some of my things over from my D drive then?
Like applications and games or anything. Because currently i was downloading a game that was about 14 gigs and i had downloaded about 3-4 gigs. And my internet connection is so bad( max 50kb/s)

Anything that was installed will have to be reinstalled. There will be no registry entries if you simply move them from one partition to another and any files that the install put in various places won't exist. Can't say about the download.

14Gigs, sound like GTA 4 you are downloading, you would be better off buying it from retail then from a Torrent, especially when it could all be for nothing. Getting back to your real problem, you should have a look at EasyBCD it a great free program that allows you to change all your boot options and add or delete boot entries.

Did you have Vista installed first, on the first partition i.e. (originally) C ?

Assuming you are using Windows boot management, that would have been the Active partition containing Bootmgr and BCD.

The MBR is located in it's own space on the first track.

What partitioning app. did you use to do that ?

If you have simply deleted it, your partition manager may have a partition undelete function , which should do the job.

If you cannot undelete the partion ( only if it is unallocated space - otherwise, no dice ) and wish to save a reinstall you might also try marking your o/s partition as active. Then see if startup repair can locate it and replace the missing boot files onto that partition.

On the other hand, if you do reinstall onto your first partition, you ought to be given the option at startup to boot into either o/s.

Yes it is, but I just want to be sure that it runs smooth and good before i actually buy it, u think my specs are good enough?

Intel Core 2 Duo 2.65ghz
4GB RAM
Nvidia GeForce Go 8600M GS 512MB
And i got dirext x and all that other stuff

BUT! It's a laptop so I dont know if its fast enough...
But do u think its good enough?
