My NAS, advice appreciated.

Heyho let's go..

So for the moment I have two systems that I could turn into a NAS server, both AMD hence the thought of turning them/only one of them into some kind of NAS similar system, the first system: Gigabyte F2A85X-UP4 + A4-5300 & the second one: ASUS M4A87TD/USB3 + AMD Phenom II X2 555.

Now I think I have read it would be smart to use Linux as the OS but what subversion, I do not know.

And then of course the biggest of them all, what is the purpose of the NAS? Well firstly I wanna have some kind of Minecraft thingy put up here so that I would be able to access my "world" where ever I may be, hopefully some kind soul out there know what I am blabbering about. Secondly well just a simple media library, I most often look at movies that are very big in size(50gb)..

If there is anything that you feel like that I haven't covered please let me know, because we both want the same or shall we say it like this: you wanna help me achieve this and I wanna help myself achieve it aswell.

First, I am no NAS GURU.Probably the best NAS program is FreeNAS Project - Open Source Storage - FreeNAS Project. Unless you are quite familiar with Linux, the learning curve is steep, but the benefits can be very rewarding. You will need a good CPU and a lot of ram, if it is used with several computers. Set up right, it can be an excellent media server, computer backup, and file retrieval server.

If you are looking for a plug and play NAS, Windows Home Server can meet your needs and do the same things, but it is not free.

but I think I'll just go with some version of Linux and try to find some program. For the moment I don't have that much ram but I'm thinking about buying some more but it depends on costs.

I hope you find what you are looking for. I'm not a Linux expert, but I think any Linux Distro could do what you want, with the right programs and set up right.

Well maybe you could..

What Linux distro would you use if you wouldn't have the necessary ram for the software you earlier linked to?

I am not sure, but would probably try to find the necessary programs using Linux Mint. They have a good forum with people who can help to do most anything. The best part of Linux Mint, is it works, as soon as installed, has a UI that most users could figure out and is pretty configurable. I would try with Mint.
